Anyone want to give some input on how to make the front look better?
Hi all! Thanks for checking out our project. We bought a home built in 1978 that needs some real help with curb appeal. We have ordered new garage doors (CHI stamped shaker in walnut) and we are in the process of tearing out the front porch and walkway to replace all the concrete. What I really need some help with what to do about the ugly wood wall and beams until we are able to tear it out and replace it. Eventually we would like to tear the whole thing out and install a composite wall that looks more in line with the MCM style (see photo), but for now, we need some ideas on how to use paint to make this look nicer. The main color of the house is a taupey-beige color, so any ideas on how to accent that would be appreciated. As much as we would like to do the wood slats like in the picture, that isn't something we can afford. We also aren't sure if we should paint around the windows (see pic #3) with an accent color or keep them the same color as the house.

The design has a slight hint of a Frank Gehry/deconstructivism house (not buildings he did, ha!) or Alden B Dow feel to me — on a calmer level. And not as chaotic as a Gehry house. It could be me just romanticizing it, though. :D It reminds me of a house I lived in as a kid, very similar front.
In this organic and very natural setting and with your other colors, I think a rust color would look fabulous. But I will be in the minority, I know, as the Urbane Bronze (and Romabio the rock) suggestions come rushing in, as always.
ETA: I think a tan/beige color would look good, too.ETA2 (sorry) ..
I like this orange, too.
With any of these colors, I'd stain those front beams the same walnut as the garage door.Jilly

Comments (35)Marcy96- The main reason I decided against the tumbled and travertine was the possibility of it turning pinkish. To answer your question, we were very lucky when it came to removing the tiles. The installer was someone who my husband saw previous work and then he in turn recommened him for three jobs. (My husband owns and manages real estate.) When it came time for him to install ours,he did a great job. But the color looked terrible. The white tiles took on a gray cast. MY DH agreed and saw how upset I was. It was removed for free!It really was not messy. However, this leaves you with a compromised wall that has the sheetrock ripped off. You now no longer have the option to paint it and wait. You are left with an awful looking carboard wall! I don't know why we couldn't replace the sheetrock, my DH was against that. So, now I am waiting for the installer to come back and put my new tiles in. I wanted low maintenance in my high use kitchen and I was in a hurry and didn't know better and-and-and, and so I went with laminate countertops - which I am perfectly satisfied with EXCEPT, you need to mount faucets into a metal flange with laminate countertops - and that can only come with top-mount sinks. And what I am finding is that the mfrs are making topmount but if you want to shop price for a higher end sink lke a large single basin - there isn't that much competition so the prices are not discounted. Comments (16)I think I would pull it down and have something built that is closer to the actual size of the entry so it doesn't interfere with the window on the left. Pull the landscaping and re-do it. I would add horizontal wood planters and vertical plantings that are appropriate for a mid century style home like horsetail and snake plant. Have everything power washed-roof, house, and driveway. Add a modern mailbox, house numbers and lights. I would replace the sidewalk with large 24x24 pavers that go directly to the front of the door as opposed to off to the side. I can't really see the door very well but it appears to be full glass with two glass sidelights. If that's true, I'd paint it out in a cool color like an aqua or burnt orange. 3 years agoThe only feature that sticks out for me is the rafters that look like ladders. What if you removed them and extended the roofline? Then make the area protected by the fencing much smaller to open up the entrance. It cold be the existing fencing or horizontal boards.

3 years agoI suggest looking at a lot of Japanese architecture, and ink drawing nature art for inspiration. Seriously! You’ll feel much more at peace with where the house is now and get ideas to make small changes that really work with your natural surroundings, because those pines are full of personality and really boss the house.
As you know, most Japanese decor works with a very limited palate — blacks, whites, pops of red and some sea and sky blues. Raw wood and stone are really very prominent. It all inspired a lot of MCM, so it’s a good foundation.
