Lovely !!

After a summer here that never seemed to want to end, today was our first day of a "real" fall. A very much needed and moderately heavy rainfall and daytime temps that barely cracked 50F!

Because we have been much drier and warmer than usual, fall color is mixed. Adequately irrigated gardens tend to be pretty good while native trees and wild plantings not so much. A lot of very early leaf drop.

peren.all - yes it's a very big property! All the garden areas have deteriorated over the decades and they've started renewing them in the past few years. The rock garden was the first to be updated. Then they did the rose garden - which is now also a perennial garden. The herb/medicinal area has been done. I'm not sure what they might plan on doing in the garden area that has the iris garden and clematises and various perennials. The lilac dell probably needs renewal too and parts of the arboretum and the wetland areas. It's a LOT of space to address and I'd guess it'll be a decade or more of work! Given the interruption from the virus, it's been a while since we've checked out some of it so next spring we'll likely be visiting the gardens that we haven't visited in a few years. We last visited the rock garden just before the pandemic struck and the garden has changed/grown a lot since then!

I am late to the party here, but Woody came up with the great idea to meet in the RBG. I had been in the renovated rock garden once, shortly after it opened, and at that time it had a lot of maturing to do. This time is was just perfect, the perennials had filled in nicely, while the old bones of mature trees and rock formations are still there. I didn't take any pictures, but Woody shows one of my favourite groupings: the Anemone 'Honorine Jobert' under the river birch. 'Honorine Jobert' would be on my short-list of favourite perennials. Hard to beat that elegance in pure white and clear yellow. Mine is still blooming today, proving that we have not had a frost yet above ground level. It instantly turns to dirty brown at the first touch of frost on the blooms. To improvise on Henry Wadsworth: in a good year it is very, very good, but in a bad year it turns horrid ;-).

I am looking forward to seeing the early spring bulbs in April! Coming, Woody?
