Help with design ideas for wall between kitchen and family room
Comments (8)aokat15, I saw your reference on my "boxed in columns" post. Thanks for referring me here. We're definitely on the same track. I really liked the examples that you and the other posters put up. I think we're leaning toward the idea shanghaimom posted with the columns and the arch except DH and I were thinking to panel 3 sides and install shelves on the inside. In my situation, the family room side is a walkway, so we'll have plenty of space for an overhanging bar with a few stools. I definitely need a place for my cookbooks that is easily accessible, yet doesn't take up valuable space in the main kitchen storage area and this seemed like the best solution. In the picture below, we already have the basic structure....See MoreFamily room help with media piece and ajoining wall with fireplace
Comments (12)So you'll want a console in the 70-80" range. The white one is 74". I just found this one on Houzz. You can likely find something similar for cheaper elsewhere. Comments (17)I very much like Beverly's 2nd photo of the mantle that extends perhaps 6 feet on either side of the FP opening, with shelving below on each side. It's dramatic and lovely. Back to landrstein's question about the 5.5' and 12'height dimensions that I suggested might be possibilities for the double mantles I was envisioning, those dimensions were for how far above the floor they would be, not how wide they would be. It would be good if you could get a designer to draw to scale what you want it to look like. It's important that you and the contractor are on the same page, and drawings will help you get there....See MoreFireplace conundrum and overall family room design challenge
Comments (8)You should be able to get a corner media cabinet to put under the TV to hold peripherals and ground that zone -- no built-ins needed. As for the rest, I'd take down the valences and try just living with the blinds for a while. It could be that accordian blinds would be all you need, or you could get some that are bottom-up/top-down to give you some privacy while keeping the light. You need a larger piece of art over the fireplace -- surely there's another place for the current beloved one. Look at the firebox for scale, think horizontal. Your area rug is too close to the carpet -- either do without or get something (a) large enough for the front feet of all the furniture to rest on it, and (b) with some contrast to the carpet. Ideally this would also introduce some accent color to the room: right now, if you get rid of the red chairs, the only unifying color is beige. (Maybe the art over the couch is bringing something you could work from.) Coffee table? lamps? Mix some books into that bookcase?...See More- last year
