I need help with my guest bedroom!

I have my parent's Early American hardrock maple bedroom furniture in my guest room and am ready for a redo. Although I am not a fan of Early American, I am actually ok with the bed.- it is a solid good piece. I am not opposed with keeping either the chest or dresser (minus the mirror-would want to hang another), if I could paint it & replace hardware(not sure of the work involved). I don't think I need both pieces in the room. Would like 2 matching nightstands, but not sure if painted or metal ?? We plan to remove the carpet & put wood floors down. Although the room is painted in a neutral warm brown color, I would like to lighten it to the original taupe that was in there. Any suggestions on what furniture should be in that room and placement, colors or anything to help the Early American look. I would just like to create a relaxing & simple guest room for those who come. I tend to like traditional, but love the simplicity of the modern look.

Thanks for any help!
