Just destroyed my garbage disposal, so now I need a new one.
Comments (9)I can say from experience that the Insinkerator Evolution Pro Excel is very quiet. Much quieter than any other disposal I've experienced, although a tad louder than a Miele dishwasher. Even the rubber collar at the sink drain is designed to cause flowing water to block upward propagating sound. (This does lead to having to push smaller items such as piles of tea leaves through it rather than expecting them to flow through as they would have on the older design drain collars.) NOTE however, that the distance from the drain to the exit port is slightly larger than for a standard disposal, and if your plumbing trap weir location is just adequate for a standard design, it may not be easily adaptable to the Evolution. If your weir is presently at least an inch or so below the port of your present disposal, then it should be ok. I have found good prices at PEX Supply. kas...See MoreNeed recommendations for OTR Microwave and Garbage Disposal.
Comments (13)The built in exhaust in the OTR MC is an issue you should also consider. This depends on at least 2 issues: (1) whether you can exhaust to the outside, which is preferable; (2) your cooking habits. Generally, OTR MCs do not exhaust as well as separate range hoods. But if your space is limited and you need the OTR go with it, and be aware that you will not get optimal exhaust capacity, which means with certain kinds of cooking, some odors may spread and linger in the house. You can get an OTR MC that exhausts to the outside, and should seriously consider one if your range is on an outside wall and that kind of venting is possible. If not, make sure you get one with a really good recirculating filter. Consumer Reports rates them for that feature and other features as well....See MoreGarbage disposal/water filtration
Comments (5)Consumer Reports top-rated disposer is the Waste King Legend 8000, $139 at Home Depot and Amazon. People seem to love (well, at least appreciate) the Insinkerator Evoluation Compact for $169 at Amazon and find it "quieter". Even the cheapest disposer is $100 so you might as spend a few bucks extra for something that you're going to live with until it breaks. Read the installation manuals before deciding. You can install it yourself if you can hold the darn thing up while attaching it. Also determine before buying whether you will have to direct wire it or just plug it in....See MoreMountain Plumbing's garbage disposer?
Comments (8)@pittsburrito - I googled and this came up instantly: ”Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) is an opaque thermoplastic and amorphous polymer. “Thermoplastic” (as opposed to “thermoset”) has to do with the way the material responds to heat. Thermoplastics become liquid (i.e. have a “glass transition”) at a certain temperature (221 degrees Fahrenheit in the case of ABS plastic). They can be heated to their melting point, cooled, and re-heated again without significant degradation. Instead of burning, thermoplastics like ABS liquefy which allows them to be easily injection molded and then subsequently recycled.” What you want is either an Insinkerstor or Waste King disposal that is at least 3/4 hp. Look at the warranties. Waste King for example offers 7-10-year in-home warranties. Why would you want to buy an unknown brand when the 2 best-known brands are excellent choices? I don’t understand....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
