Granite to go with multicolor slate floor & cherry cabs?
Comments (2)I have Madura Gold with a quarzite backsplash that looks a lot like slate-- maybe it's a bit like your floor. The granite has movement, but not so much that it's too much with the splash, for me at least:...See MoreLarge marble slab possible
Comments (15)Just to clarify...these plans are from our architect. He has been working with a struc. engineer and together they have determined that we can not get away without any columns. Our hope was to not have any columns, but they told me these are the minimum. Our goal is to have an open floorplan. The original old house was a series of many separated little rooms. We have gone through many!! variations. The original home space creates a few awkward spaces however it is laid out. We are working within existing spaces. This plan is the best of them. The kitchen layout has not been streamlined yet, regarding sink location, etc. However, I'm not sure what is meant by "disproportionate" - as it is a fairly straightforward U-shaped kitchen layout. The cooktop will be centered on the island. The sink will be to the left of the cooktop, although farther away from the cooktop as needed. The ovens will be located on the right end of the U (landing space behind on island right), the refrigerator on the left end of the U (landing space behind on island left). The posts did move in the two images, same vertical plane. Architect had them inset, but I wanted them moved to the ends so as not to impede chair/stool space. The idea is to have the columns integrate into the end of the island, would be at the end of the island, whether 4' or 6' island....See MoreLook of large slab porcelain that's less expensive?
Comments (36)@joseph_corlett. I spent the afternoon at a large volume fabricator warehouse, looking at their remnants. Although they had lots of remnants, I don't think I found what I was looking for. I am looking for a soft, almost-white, solid colored quartz. Looked at some online and think that the Hanstone Royale Blanc might be the right shade of off-white. Do you know of any other brands that might have the off-white solid quartz? I thought maybe if I could find a fabricator that sold a lot of the brand of quartz, I could find a remnant piece in the color I want. Thanks for any advice you can provide....See MoreWood floor, moisture in slab and termites, Oh My!!
Comments (1)Thank you for your response and please forgive me for my slow reaction. As further background, about 4 years ago we had to replace our family and dining room floors with slate after our engineered wood buckled in places about 8-15 feet from the house perimeter due to moisture. The floor dealer stated that the moisture was fine prior to installation and a moisture membrane was not put down prior to the wood floor installation. When the floor failed we had one put down and had the slate installed. At that time there were soft areas in the wood in the living room adjoining the dining room and evidence of termites. We had those areas of wood removed and had the areas treated and put down new pieces of engineered wood. We also have the same engineered floor in our master bedroom (actually the whole house except for the baths and slate areas).. In an area away about 15 feet from the house perimeter we recently found evidence of either moisture or termites. We had guys in to check and they found both, with live termites under the floor in the area in question. They treated the areas and again replaced the wood floor with new pieces of wood. At this point we're treating the problem with band aids. Most likely there are cracks throughout the whole foundation. I do have pictures from the areas when the floor was removed.. At that time the workers didn't do anything in particular to fill the cracks outside of the regular surfac leveling and new membrane. We do live in an area of Southern Calif. that has has had movement issues. Our house is from 1978 and was tented about 10 years ago. In the future we'd like to be able to sell the house, but don't see how we can with this being an ongoing problem. Any help you can advise would be gladly received....See MoreKathy
