Lighting Layout Design - How many can lights are too many?
Comments (3)UCL is best for task lighting. In addition, it can effectively replace the main lighting under certain circumstances - early morning, late at night. If you want a soft light, the light output color should be 2700k. UCL Installation would be greatly helped if your kitchen cabinets have flat undersides without any interrupting fences. The rough rule of thumb I used for my kitchen was ~35 lumens per sq ft. Total area * 35 gives you the total illumination required. Divide the total by the output of each can (assume 600 or 500+ lumens per can) if all the lighting is envisaged to come from the recessed cans. A normal 60W incandescent bulb outputs ~ 800 lumens, but when put inside a can, the effective output is significantly reduced. If you use a LED recessed can light such as the LR6 or CR6, the lighting will be superior to a standard recessed can light (incandescent or CFL). Recessed cans are typically spaced ~ 4' apart. However, if necessary, the spacing could be reduced to 3' for areas such as the kitchen. The recessed can in the keeping room could be replaced with some surface mount / chandelier/ pendant....See MoreToo many can lights, how to cover up and what is the best light?
Comments (3)The question should be what LED light as LED lighting is displacing other types of lighting - fluorescent, incandescent. The lighting level should be appropriate for the tasks being done in the space. A often used number for kitchens is 35 lumens per sq ft. The typical output from a recessed can is about 600 lumens using a 60w incandescent bulb. A CR 6 lamp has an advertised output of ~ 625 lumens and uses ~ 10 w. There are a number of LED light options available today - Cree branded CR & BR series, Sylvania RT series, ... The light quality, spread and amount varies. To properly patch a hole, a "california patch" can be applied. http://www.finehomebuilding.com/item/9212/california-drywall-patch...See Morehow many metal finishes is too many?
Comments (1)I am somewhat in the same boat. I did polished brass everywhere in my 1998 colonial. I didn't want to go ORB for my redecorating because I have white cabinets everywhere and thought it was too much of a contrast. I haven't hung them yet but I am replacing all my brass lighting with antique bronze-ish (using Murray Feiss Coventry Castle & Minka Lavery Belcaro lines). I switched my cabinet knobs to Cifial's French Bronze finish. They are a soft gold color with black antiquing in the grooves. They blend with the polished brass. I priced new faucets in Cifial French bronze and well, let's just say the polished brass will stay for a while....See MoreHow many is too many when decorating a home?
Comments (19)I hope you'll post pics on this thread when you're finished with your room so we can see how your magic worked on your husband! I LOVE that room you posted and the look of the barn doors there. But, in reality, if that were my room and home, I would never close them because the view is so gorgeous and it looks like privacy isn't an issue. I guess if someone needed to sleep in total darkness, it would be effective. I would feel claustrophobic to have solid walls when they are closed, but that's just me (no window coverings at all for me). Also, how could you peek out the window if you felt the need? Then I think of just how would you close the ones behind the bed? The end tables seem to be in the way of pulling them from the sides. Would you stand on the bed and move them? I would think you could have a wall panel behind them to be the "headboard" when they are over the windows, if you wanted. I think I've seen barn door style glass shower doors :-)...See MoreA
