L Sectional or two sofas arranged in an L??

I’m having trouble deciding between doing an L shape sectional or just arranging 2 sofas in an L shape. This room serves as our living room and family room so I think the sectional would be nice for my family of 4 to watch TV but worried about the lines you will see on the back of the sofa when in the kitchen. I’m considering the Spencer sofa from Ethan Allen. None of the furniture in the photo is staying!

Two couches, no question. Much more versatile and you have FOUR arm seats. I won’t sit on a sectional unless I can have an arm seat. (It’s like having 3 kids in the car when one doesn’t get a window seat. 😁)

I have a sectional. I sit in the corner of it ALL THE TIME. sectionals are functional or people wouldn't own them. I would opt for 2 sofas and add an arm chair with an ottoman. it will feel more open.

Please tell me you are moving the tv and getting a new fan lol.

The styling on the arms is very common in that year. A set in an old Sears Catalog is very similar, has similar legs but is not as large. As you might know, you have a choice of more than one configuration when one chose sectional sets. The armless section was referred to as the 'bumper'. Many sets have an option of an armless chair set in the middle one could use to swing the arrangement into an "L" shape. You could have a set with no arms, or arm rests on both sides. Neat piece.......a blast from the past for me, as my folks had sectionals when I was little. The catalogue house could have contracted with any one of a number of manufacturers to have pieces made under the Montgomery Ward name. Sets like that cost about three hundred M/L for those two pieces and although it sounds cheap now, it wasn't then. That's a higher end set for catalogues.

That is the only living space in the house. It's a townhouse we're renting for a year or two. We sacrificed on space to be close to the beach, which has been an awesome choice, until Irma, of course. We don't have any other "real" furniture for the living area, and we wanted to avoid purchasing anything until we bought a home, but when the old sofa had to go, we had to replace that. So we don't have any other seating, but it's really not a big deal. We don't have kids or family in the area, and we don't have a bunch of people over at one time, so the sectional is enough for our current needs. Is there anything in particular you would suggest for ottomans? I would like something that fits physically with the sofa to get something close to a chaise feel without having to close off the space permanently as you would with a chaise. Finding the right size is important too, as I dislike the really big ottomans for sectionals; they take up way too much space and prevent the use of a coffee table.

Thanks for the great tips. Yes, it's a good point that 16 won't be sitting at the same time...more like 12 or so. Sadly, I have to go fairly dark due to the cleaning and staining issues. I should have added that I plan to add a large 12 x 15 area rug to break up the dark sofas from the darkish wood. I can't go with medium gray because it will look too "matchy-matchy" with the med. gray stone fireplace. Quick question/concern...I searched for sofas that are made from "Sunbrella" people here suggested and there are only a few and they are outdoor sofas. Mostly, the Sunbrella fabric is pillows. Also, I'll be removing both sofa tables behind the sofas that are there now, so that will give me another~ 4+ feet. But I still plan on putting more narrow sofa tables as I don't want the sofas right up against the walls, so it will be more like an extra 2 feet I'll be gaining. Any other suggestions for a "tough" fabric that won't be torn easily? We've had issues with guests sitting on the sofas, etc., with keys, etc, in their back pockets that tear the fabric or snag it. What are opinions on leather? Vinyl? Also, I'd like to lighten up the room with a cleaner, more modern white (ish) paint, maybe with a touch of gray, )but not with any blue or "pink" in it.) The walls are now painted Sherwin-Williams "Accessible Beige" and the Doors (not seen in the pictures are "Dovetail"...which I LOVE, but is way too dark for the walls. I've already gone down the line of the "Dovetail" paint strip and the lighter colors look kinda "pink-ish" in that room.) Thanks again everyone

"Breaking the Bank" is not a term anyone can work with. You should define your budget as a realistic dollar range you are willing to spend. As a retailer, I don't know what your budget is and as such can't make a recommendation since I have sectionals in all price ranges. Also, consider posting photos of your space from two different angles into the room as those show the style and decor of the room, plus window and door positions.

Ha! Fan is waiting on a new bulb and the TV is staying put for now as the mantle is way too high for it to go above. If I do two sofas- do they need to be the same size? Could I do a 102” across and then a 74” by the windows?

I have two sofas. They are not in an L, but face each other. They are by the same maker and are very very similar in style, but are not the same color.

Weigh pro’s/con’s for your family. Which arrangement provides the best viewing for everyone. Are your children younger, wanting to curl up with you, or not. For entertaining, what would you prefer. Maybe a good idea is adding two chairs if going with a sectional.

IMO sectionals are the most expensive way to buy the least number of comfy seats. Arm rests = comfrot so nomatter how big the sectional 2 people get arm rests. everyone else is just sitting in that dreaded center seat on the sofa . 2 sofas in an L perfect and if you have space to add more think some chairs . Sectionals are also often very site specific and do not work well if you move.

What would be most comfortable for your family, OP?

I’ve never had a sectional myself, but am comfortable on them at others’ homes. Pillows make fine arm rests, if needed. It’s not a big deal.

I think either would look fine, so go with whichever you think your family would enjoy most.

I think you have room for a longer sofa.

Since the OP mentioned the family enjoys watching TV, I’d think that means stretching out comfortably and facing the TV, not a conversation set-up.

The corners add another feature that is appealing ….you can lay back ..feet up…facing either direction..for reading..tv..enjoying the view…but there are two other things to enhance your comfort..lots of pillows..lumbar especially..and being sure the back is not too high to be able to lay your head back when relaxing …yours spot looks perfect for a curved sectional,too…to soften up all the squares in the space..

What about a U-shaped sectional? Or an L with an ottoman on one end (to make a U)? That way two adults can put their feet up, and the little ones can be in the middle. If you remove back cushions, they might even have enough room to slouch with a pillow.

I have been more comfortable watching TV on sectionals, but I only had to share with the dogs. I did not use my curved corner sectional. I like the square corners. I had one outside, and I miss it. My sister has a super comfortable one, and I would fall asleep on it. I like that you can be in different positions on a sectional more easily than a sofa.

Just be careful if you do consider a sectional as some are really bulky, take up a lot of floor space, but don't fit that many people on them. Pay attention to the corner and the seats on either side of it ... can 2 people actually sit there without hitting their knees. A wider curved/clipped corner piece will give you more separation between those two seats and give more leg room.

Are you thinking two full size Spencer sofas? If so, is there enough room? The rug pictured below is 9'x12'.
