I keep any twisties I come across in a special container in one of my kitchen drawers. I save them from bundles of produce, from cords on electronic devices, etc. Some are really long and sturdy. I'm also finally able to find non-ziplock storage bags that come with rows of short twisties and I have them stashed away, too. I hate those useless bread clips...

I throw out the clips and use twist ties that I've saved if I need to close the bag again. Buns usually come with the clips but the bread we buy still has the twist ties.

The bread clips and twisty ties are different colors. The colors represent the day of the week that the product was baked, so it's easier to tell which packages are the freshest. The color codes are:

• Monday - blue
• Tuesday - green
• Thursday - red
• Friday - white
• Saturday - yellow

I throw out twisties and plastic clips. Just too annoying. I twist the end of the bag and tuck the end under when I store it on the shelf.

The only thing I hate about bread clips is when they, rather than the bags, are stamped with a date. Invariably they get mixed up after which no telling how old the bread is.

(Yeah I know, open it up, look at it and feel it and taste it. But still.)

I actually have no problems with the plastic clips, and prefer them over the ties. I do the same as Elizabeth - twist the bag closed, put the clip back on and then tuck the end under when I put the product back down.

I love the 'clips' that are sold at Ikea, the long ones that are sturdy and clip over the bag. I use them for bread and for frozen items, too. I can't find them on the Ikea website, but they are very inexpensive and colorful. Just a couple or three bucks for about 2 dozen of them. They are the best.

I use 1¼" binder clips for all plastic bags. I used to buy them at Staples or Office Depot, but I got the last ones from Amazon. I have them in zebra and leopard print. I use larger binder clips for larger bags, such as for chips.

I also use these clips for bags of flour - until I store the flour in another container. Sometimes I use two clips on one bag, but I have dozens of clips.

The zebra print clips were $2.89 for a box of 12 at Office Depot, but they have been discontinued, and if you find them somewhere else, they will be more expensive.

I too do the same as Elizabeth. Hold the end, give the bag a quick spin, and then put it down with the twisted end sitting under the bread.

I never twist the bags - I fold the end of the bag into a triangle, similar to an envelope, and the I fold the end over itself several times to make a better seal and clip the folded end. My brother does not do this, and so I have to reclose the bags after he has clipped them, but it's very easy to do and does not bother me.

Lindsey, I didn't realize there was a formula. I always dig to the back to see if color changes. Then, I will check date. Sometimes the freshest was moved up, but usually.

Yep they are a PITB and go right to the garbage first time I open anything that uses them.

I just keep a bunch of clips attached to a shelf in the pantry. Easy to grab and use.

I’ll still use a bread bag clip if it’s doing the job, though. Or a twist tie. Whatever works.

Lars, I use my clips for everything, too. I do the triangle fold but will do a rolled fold on products that have recloseble zippers that don’t work. My daughter uses the IKEA clips.

I don’t really care for them either, mainly because DH thinks we need to collect them. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I love bread clips. The kind you buy, although the ones that come on the bags are great to put on the ends of tape to keep it started or to fix a flip flop. Just place it on the bottom of the shoe to hole the toe thing in place if its broken. Bread clip uses These are the kind I buy

I use both chip clips and the binderclips Lars mentioned. Also, like Lars, I do the triangle/envelope fold with a clip.

I don't generally use them for bags, but it doesn't aggravate me when I do. This is what I use:

To use any clips, I always twist the bag a few times first so it can be easily clipped.

And there are some pretty creative people coming up with ideas to use them 😃

I want to know where people get all those colorful tags. All I ever see are white ones.

Those plastic clips are addictive to fold ... unfold ... fold ... unfold ... fold ... until finally they quit bending, and break. Then they can be thrown out!

joann_fl, those are like the Ikea clips. They work on thin plastic bags like bakery and frozen things. But they aren't any good for chips or paper bags, but then neither are the little bread clips that come with the bread.

Problem with getting the wrong dayed clip on the bread bag?

Before you stow the loaf, or first time you open the bag write date on bag with felt pen.

When you prepare to close the bag with a twistie, do you collect the bag into a smaller diameter tube before wrapping the tie? Twist it a little, to become something like a thin rope, and I think you can place that clip with small effort.

I love using them to keep plastic tape on a roll easily accessible.

We get milk, three unlabelled bags in a heavier bag than a bread bag, holding 4 litres - it takes about 3.85 litres to be a U.S. gal., about 4.5 to be a gal. in Canada.

Milk being more mobile than bread, keeping those three bags of milk lined up while you twist the opening of the outside bag into a rope-like configuration while you get that (about same size and some thicker) clip into place around it is some tough job.

I don't know whether they ever used twist ties to close that big bag, but I've never seen such if they did.

A clamp for papers, a large paper clip with plastic covering or a clothespin will hold a thin bag, e.g potato chips. If you want to bother taping three or four of the bread bag clips together, I think that you'll find that they're less inclined to twist so they they lose their grip on the thin bags.

Yes. Our bread comes home in a brown paper bag.

I think those colored clips mark what day it was made.

I don't know about the US, but a Canadian bread company switched their bread clips to cardboard ones that are 100% useless. But they save trees.... So, when we buy bread that still uses the plastic ones we save them. I bake bread and need them. The plastic clips also have the expiry date on them which is harder to put on a plastic bag. they're also colour coded for the bread guy when he goes into stores to check for expiries to buy back from the store.

I like them. I save both the clips and twist ties. As OJ mentioned our milk comes in plastic bags snd I reuse the bags. I just finished making some croutons and the extras that didn't fit in my jar are in a small milk bag with a clip.

Deb_ab, I'd heard that some asre going to cardboard but I haven't seen them yet. But again I don't buy bread, I only see the clips on my milk or a bag of apples etc.

We used to collect tons of them for our kindergarten class. The kids learned about sorting with them--by color, by shape, by size, by words-or-no-words. Who would think there could be such a variety? We would give each child a handful and let them at it.

I‘ve never been terribly bothered by bread bag clips. If you twist the bag several times, it is thin enough to easily put the clip back on. I don’t much like twisties, and haven’t used one in decades.
