Your house is amazing! congratulations!

Those stones are an eyesore. I'd paint the exterior ones a dark color, and the fireplace stone soft white. (keep the mantle and the black hearth, they are perfect.)

I love the railing, the room dividers and that triple light fixture in the living room. Keep those! They are wonderful original touches that deserve preservation.

Popcorn ceilings: get rid of that! VERY IMPORTANT: have it tested for asbestos first.

New flooring everywhere, and that kitchen is going to need a total overhaul.

BTW, one of my favorite kitchen finishes in a MCM update is plywood, the kind that's designed to showcase the beautiful stripy edge.

however, that's probably custom and could be expensive. If you need to do premade cabinets, slab front is the only way to go here!

The first thing that jumped out at me was the horizontal trim at garage level. I think if you eliminate that, your overall house shape makes sense:

I'd also do a slab front door, a slab garage door, and a small tree giving lacy shade. If the stone fireplace is original, I wouldn't touch it - it looks interesting both inside and out.

I like when there are mixed materials on the front - stone, siding and wood. I think the stonework on the chimney is awesome! Inside and out.

Here are some inspirations for the front of the house - bring in a wood element and definitely change the front door.

For the inside - floors and the kitchen - there is nothing there that says mid mod.

The room divider is great, so is the veneered wall. The staircase railings are amazing!

That floating ceiling piece is really cool but is lost because it is white. I would paint that different or cover it with wood. I also agree about the popcorn ceilings - not sure who came up with that idea for any house! I am not a fan of vertical blinds - some really cool drapes would be great for the windows.

You are going to have so much fun with this house.

Funny combination of upgrades... the front door, right off the bat is so wrong. it would be the first thing I changed, making a good investment to address inside and out.

(not advertising the brand, just the style and stain.

I don't mind the lower kitchen cabinets, but the upper door design doesn't work in a mid-century home. Could the doors come off, or could the doors be reversed? New hardware would make a huge difference.

There is very little, I would do to that house. Its a beautiful well maintained house. Modernizing it is going to take away from the house, not help it out. Judianna above said it well... Of course it is dated...it's supposed to be. : > }

The kitchen is in desperate need of updating. Flooring too. None of those three things are special in the least. Garage door and front door need improving too.

Lawn is amazing...is it real or a forever lawn (which we have around our pool and love it)?

Love the interior details, especially stair railings. The kitchen would have to change though; looks almost DIY to me. The exterior makes me dizzy! There's too much going on and the eye doesn't know where to focus; certainly not on the front door where it should go. I agree with SeattleMCM's idea of painting the stone inside and out. That should help reduce the busy look, and mjlb is right about eliminating that line across the front. I would paint all sided surfaces the same color and add a great MCM color to a new front door.

Note: I do like the square-ish shape of those stones, just not the color. I think I was a bit harsh when I said they're an eyesore. I agree that stonework like that is very MCM, but I don't care. Even though it's original, I will never be a fan of stone or brick that's in multiple colors, particularly when they mixed really dark and light tones.

I like the inspo pic @elcieg posted above-- I think that may be the best example of what you can do to work with them on the exterior. But for the interior fireplace, it's gonna be a huge nope for me. I would paint it white and have zero regrets.

The front of the house looks unbalanced to me with the weight of the stone and the large living room window on the right against the light colors and tiny windows on the left. Better balance could be achieved with different paint for the siding.

Depending on what's going on inside, I might want to replace the window on what I assume is an upstairs bedroom. midcentury architects loved small, high windows, and I...don't. They are great for privacy and furniture placement, I guess, but I'd rather have more light and I think a bigger window in a style echoing the LR windows would better balance the facade. Of course, it's not my money I'm spending, so take it FWIW.

I love the stair railing but if you have small children I would check it against code. Some of those gaps look big enough for a toddler head. If so, I wouldn't replace but I might jury rig something (plexiglas?) until the kids are old enough.

The kitchen is very 90s. If a fully remodel isn't in the cards, new slab doors (especially for the uppers) would go a long way toward re-MCMing the kitchen.

I have too many allergies to be a fan of wall-to-wall carpet, so I would be looking to replace that. If the house is located more southerly, I might opt for tile throughout the main living area (including the kitchen, so that project might wait until you are ready to remodel the kitchen). I probably would not do hardwood floors with all of the MCM wood elements (which I like a lot).

Like the kitchen cabinets, the front door is not in keeping with the style of the house. New door style, maybe in an interesting color, definitely.

I don't love the stone, but I probably would not paint it. It's too integral to what the house was intended to be. Definitely give it a chance before committing to painting it.

This is me playing with colors, not a recommendation (I like it better than the original but I think there are probably better combos than this)

imo there's too much interior white paint.
