Mid Century Modern White Exterior
Comments (23)The last thing I consider especially for exteriors is which direction the front door/windows faces. Because the light is constantly changing throughout the day and the year - it's a point of criteria that literally changes by the second. I understand your attraction to the cleaner whites in terms of chips and samples. What you need to try to anticipate is what happens to white on a bigger scale and in sunlight. Just because the house faces north, doesn't mean it's on the dark side of the moon. Sunlight - from all directions - strips chromaticity or colorfulness. So that "clean" white that looks good on samples and chips ends up looking rather arctic. Simply White is a really good suggestion because it has a little bit of chroma/colorfulness and there's a chance it will "wash out" and look just right once installed. As a general rule, you can always go a little darker and a little more colorful on exteriors than you think you can because, again, sunlight will knock back the intensity....See MoreFlooring for a mid century modern home
Comments (30)When we re-did the bathroom in our house that's built in 1955 we did a mix of modern and throwback to the mid-century look since that's our favorite aesthetic. We used an IKEA base cabinet that we floated on the wall and I still love it. Also still love our tile choice for the floor, harkening back to the original pink floor tile that was sadly long-gone buried under ugly 90s tile on top that we had to rip all out, but did get to see it at least in bits while the floor was ripped up. Don't mind our truly terrible decision to use white grout on the floor, lol. Or the cream bathmats, This photo was right after the renovation several years ago so hadn't replaced those yet (they're now light blue)....See MoreModern mid century living room design
Comments (12)Thank you so much, Beverly and decoenthusiast! The house is under renovation so I don’t have access to clean photos but here is some info about the room: It’s north-facing, and you see the room from the front entrance (front door is south facing). The back wall is an outside wall to the backyard and there is a fireplace and a ledge along a giant window, so there is really only 1 wall in the living room & that’s where the piano goes. This sitting/living room is half of a great room that also has our “formal” dining room—it has a 96” cherry live edge table & 8 walnut Knoll Nakashima chairs. The table is perpendicular to the backyard, with a big sliding glass door. The fireplace is in between the sliding door and the big window. Behind the table, against a wall that faces the piano wall, is a walnut sideboard that we are keeping. There is a light fixture over the table that is also staying. Thinking that the sofa will go parallel to the dining table and piano, (perpendicular to the windows & fireplace) and hoping to squeeze the a mid century style recliner (black leather & walnut) between the window & the piano, & 1 or 2 swivel chairs facing the backyard window. The space for the just the living portion is 10 feet wide (the wall against which the piano goes) by 13.5 feet long. The dining room opens to the kitchen which is getting redone. Oak floors will continue & we’ll have a walnut floor to ceiling cabinet along the wall that is the kitchen side of the foyer. The kitchen faces south & has 2 big windows to the front yard…dishwasher, sink, lower cabinets along the window wall in SW Gale Force (a dark navy w hint of teal). In the kitchen next to the walnut cab we’ll have an oval (37x60”) walnut table w black iron cylinder base. Chairs tbd. Cabinets around the rest of the room all same navy. Island (60x70”) will be in the middle between kitchen & dining space. Will have 3 barstools. Cooktop in island. Counters are Yosemite Falls Quartzite....See MoreHelp: What color to stain maple mid-century modern powderroom vanity?
Comments (8)The painter says he can get a good even stain on it if he does a pre-stain conditioner. Your painter isn't a wood finisher. If he suggested usng Minwax and promised to get a 'good even stain' because he's using 'conditioner', then I know for sure he isn't a wood refinisher!! Does he even know anything about Maple? I've done all types of wood, stains, aniline dyes, etc. Maple is a very tight grain wood and difficult to get dark. I did one a long time ago in a walnut color, but the results were meh. (this was back in 2012 when I actually used Minwax products! I now know better) Anyway, here is a vintage maple hutch that I sanded down to raw wood, used the conditioner, and stained in a walnut. It was in pretty rough shape when I got it. took that surface all the way done to raw wood. Is this what your vanity wood looks like? I used a Dark Walnut on this coat, and then went over it again w/Jacobean to get this shade. Seal coat, steel wool to fine sand, and a few coats of poly. finished result: You see the blotchy spots? You saw what I started with. a pristine raw wood surface. I used the conditioner and stain correctly. Yet, the coloring is still a bit uneven. If you like this, fine. top coat result in natural light. shelves too. The maple always seems to get a little blotchy w/darker colors. it's just the nature of this species. If you wanted to stain, you should have picked a diff wood. Aniline Dye? it's water base and penetrates deeply into the wood grain. it comes in a powder form you mix w/hot water I had a solid oak french door I wanted black. black stain alone wasn't enough to get it really black so Here's what I started with. The dye 1-2 coats of dye, and it still wasn't black enough. the dye makes a good base for ebony stain You can see the deeper grain here in the oak and how the dye doesn't quite get all of it. Gel stain in Ebony did the trick. Then I sealed it all w/ebony Penofin oil. waterproofs it too. It's as black as can be. did the oak window trim too. see how deep the black looks? Do you think your painter knows about these 3 steps and all the products used? First off, lets see this wood vanity. you've posted one teeny tiny pic of some tile but are wanting advice on things we can't see? get a spare piece of wood like your vanity so you can practice on it. This painter just wasn't going to use the vanity w/o sampling, was he?...See MoreVerbo
