Kitchen of the Week: Bright Mid-Century Remodel
Canadian couple redesign their kitchen in a modern style in keeping with their home's heritage
Sleek materials and a streamlined design transformed the kitchen in this 1950s bungalow into a ultimate modern kitchen with mid-century flair. While the kitchen's structure didn't change much during the renovation, owners Kirby and Ryan Weiland wanted more space to cook and a space that felt open and bright and had plenty of storage.
There had been a wall between the kitchen and the living room which completely blocked the view of the river and the valley. Kirby and Ryan took down the wall; and now the view is completely accessible.

Removing the wall itself wasn't that difficult, but it did end up presenting some challenges because the south wall was all windows. This made the installation of any upper cabinetry impossible. Kirby and Ryan skipped the overhead cabinets and went with large drawers and cabinets, making plenty of room for all of their glasses and plates. The kitchen also has a big walk-in pantry.

Though the galley layout of the kitchen pretty much stayed the same, Kirby and Ryan added plenty of space while remodeling. The 3' x 12' kitchen island is Kirby's favorite part of the kitchen — it provides plenty of prep space and enough room for an eat-in bar.
The ceiling lights for the kitchen also were kept minimal, and a skylight adds a touch of natural light.
