A Mid-Century Style Home Provides Comfortable Minimalism
Case Study: This Lake Tahoe Escape is a Work of Art On Its Own

Living with less has nothing to do with deprivation, but has everything to do with careful editing. For a case in point, let's examine this Californian dream home nested in the mountains of Tahoe. The home is void of traditional hanging artwork, but offers sculptural interest via light fixtures, furniture and architectural details such as the fireplace, stairway and exposed ceiling beams. Designed by John Maniscalco Architecture of San Francisco and built in 2009, this impeccable escape is a gorgeous extension of nature and provides a valuable lesson in comfortable minimalism.
The house itself is a work of art. This streamlined cedar structure offers expansive mountain views and lends itself to its pristine surroundings.
The open floor plan features mid-century furnishings reduced to the simplest lines. From the roomy, low-slung sofas to the Wegner folding rope chairs, to the soft wool pile carpet, this living space is minimal yet comfortable.
The living room has excellent sight lines to the exterior except for the intentional distraction of a beautiful vintage bubble chandelier.
In the kitchen, the checkered wood island becomes a prime location for communal dining. Accessories, like the simple white pottery and pendant lights, allow your eyes to rest comfortably in the space and to also notice the planked ceilings and the custom felt slipcovers on each chair.
The grand stairway is yet another example of excellence in craftsmanship. Each timber tread was hand-selected by the contractor and constructed to frame this serene view as well as another dramatic focal point, the glass chandelier.
Underneath the stair way is a special place to escape with a good book, that is if you aren't distracted by the wonders of nature.
This bedroom with its soaring ceilings provides a unique feeling of sleeping in harmony with nature.
The upholstered bed offsets the wood paneling and is accented with a pillow made from a suzani quilt. The mid century vibe is carried into the bedroom by the modern Danish lamp.
Hunker down in style with a quartet of custom bunked beds. Dressed in plush down comforters each bed also has its own Giraffe Lamp for nighttime reading.
Lush carpeting underfoot makes the transition of getting out of bed a bit more soothing.

This bathroom, pure in design, features a luxurious soaking tub and receives assistance from Mother Nature in creating a peaceful bathing experience.
Ample ceiling height allows for a row of paper lanterns to adorn the hallway.
With warm woods, plush furnishings, soft lighting, a raging fireplace, and open floor plan what more would you need to feel comfortable living with less?
