If by some dreaded chance you are painting the cabinets you have to get the actual sample on a piece of primed oak and set it in the space/ then evaluate. paint cards are fine for walls........for wood you have to test it out. ...and gelstain on cabs would be a better option..... paint the walls and improve lighting before any of this, to be honest.

How do the counter samples look next to the cabinets? You show them next to the floor which is less important than how they look next to the cabinets. I assume the cabinets are staying the same since you didn't mention painting them? If so, at least replace the pulls. I recommend you install the new counters before choosing a wall color, and before painting the whole room, either paint samples on the walls, or paint a sample board. The paint colors you're looking at are close to the counter color. It's tricky to get a wall color that goes with a counter, so that's why it's better to have it in place and choose a paint color in the lighting in your space. If you have one overhead light now might be a good time to improve the lighting in the room as well. Then if you still have room in your budget, replace the wood blinds.

Here’s a photo with the colors herbflavor mentioned, as well as some SW colors. On my monitor, Snowbound is a bit warmer and closer to your countertop color. If you want more contrast, Crushed Ice, Agreeable Gray and Repose Gray might work.

i'd take silver feather. I have a room w paint color similar. ends up reading neutral....just a hint of a shade [ non gray ] . if you were to gel stain cabs later on this will be suitable for whatever happens.

The right change of floors can help your great timeless cabinets again be the star.

the floor tile is driving the bus for all of your colors. Are you really married to this tile? anything you choose has to work w/that tile, and that tile alone. It really limits your options.

Do the demo of the tile yourselves and save a few thousand. do diff flooring.

Now pick your paint and countertop.

None of these are right. you're looking at yellow undertone whites (one of them is green)

your tiles are a warm, brick terra cotta color. you don't want yellow or green (at least not a yellowish green. you could go w/a sage green)

These are too grayish green, the last two are lavender. huge mistake picking any of these

Change the floors (or consider painting them until you have the money)

you don't have to leave it a bright white or black. you could paint it any color and do any type of stencil or design over it. there are hundreds of examples online.

I realize it wraps around into the other room. it's a big decision. But so is choosing paint/countertops based on this tile that you may change out in the future.

I'd use the money right now for the floors. live w/the countertops for now. maybe consider doing the prep work on the cabinets yourself and just hire someone to spray them.

in each of the pics the floor looks different. do you like the floor? does the floor work for you? I dont necessarily think floor has to go. but be aware of it. I'd probably have runners and mats and get w gelstaining the cabs to be more like dining furniture. it all just depends. I wouldnt paint it, as I like the multiple tones in floor..I'd pursue a new floor maybe but that can be costly for your sq footage. what exactly is the current counter you are replacing? thats a large cost too....if you could work w counter then a new backsplash and gel stain to the cabs could do a lot. going around to every possibility..aren't we???

herbflavor, gel staining those cabinets 'properly' would cost as much as painting. they all need to be stripped (I see a lot of grime and worn down finish on that island) sanded, conditioned, and then stained. pretty much the same for painting.

I understand the dark wood tone might work better w/the floor tile though. Again, the floor is driving the bus here.

mpauly, If you EVER have plans on changing this flooring, don't design your new kitchen around it.

another option is changing out the grout to a lighter tone. not white, but maybe an antique white/tan shade. at least it will brighten up the floor a bit.

gel stain can be done a few at a time if she /family care to undertake it when time is right........it looks to be an older finish.....stripping can be done two doors at a time if space is avail . it is not a high tech or expensive task. Needed mostly : the space to make a mess. and take each section one at a time so willingness to have "work in progress" but it doesnt need extensive cure time of paint so I think its a good homeowner project. ....

I've done it....the learning curve is not extensive. these are old masters gel stains. the simple point is with budgeted money get a cohesive plan..it looks a big space......unknown are long term plans for residence here.....current condition of things ....her desired return on any money spent..ability to do anything DIY..etc.

herb, I get that. I've refinished a lot of wood. done cabinets too.

to do it properly takes a lot of time. there are tons of tutorials that advise just to go over the current finish w/gel stain! horrible idea. all those years of grime/grease will leave a blotchy mess.

horrible stain job on these.

They must be stripped to raw wood to be sure that all the finish is neutralized and ready to accept something new.

after the gel stain, a top coat must be applied. there are wipe ons, but spraying is better for a professional look. This is not something an average homemaker can do. Sorry, but it's detailed work. (if the person doesn't mind a half azz look, then by all means, go for it) I'm more of a perfectionist so I would do a better job.

you can see the requisite tsp ceaning would be the first thing needed ...I'm not a betting woman but I bet that yellow finish has already worn a bit and with the cleaning needed for anything .....it would be revealed as a very worn finish and easy to strip. but its unclear if she wants to alter the cabinets. working on the island in particular w the goal a new look would give a nice new feel to the space... figure out what you have to work with after first steps.

tsp shouldn't be used on raw wood and also requires a thorough rinsing to remove all residue (also not great for wood since it tends to raise the grain)

I'd use a specific cleaner meant just for wood, or something like mineral spirits or lacquer thinner. If the previous clear coat was a shellac base, then acetone (or alcohol) would actually 'melt' or remove most of it.

Yes, the stripping wouldn't be difficult since most of it is worn, but they would still have to do a good, even job so that all the wood surface is the same.

Like I said, going through all this trouble to apply some gel stain isn't going to give a much better look than what she has. gel stained 1980-90's, oak kitchen cabinets rarely look good with an after-market stain. Plus, it's dark. with those dark tile floors and dark cabs, not really a good look for that kitchen IMO.

I planed to pain the cabinets, too. After your comments I finking about exchanging the floor tiles and better stain the wood cabinets to darker and less reddish shade.

well I hope you take the time and figure out the counter/ floor/ cabinet change and lastly backsplash and wall color as a cohesive plan. .depending on your budget this can get expensive so with new picks for things.... come back and show everything. It doesnt look like you have to rush as everything in the kitchen works..... Hope you take your time for your generous space [ I think} and get some nice changes.

pauly, you could try doing the gel stain idea on the island, and paint the other cabinets a white or some other color.

This way it won't be too dark, but you'll still have some wood look w/the island.

do a lighter countertop in a quartz or granite.

But do the floors first, and then go from there.

another option, get your perimeter cabinets refinished in a lighter, natural oak color, and do the island in something like this blue gray. (If you could do an oak wood floor in place of the tile, that would look very nice)

White cabinets and the island done in more of a Nutmeg stain color instead of dark. top it w/a white marble quartz. floors are red oak stained in a american walnut shade.

The white perimeter cabinets w/some sort of blue island seems to be pretty popular. if you're going to change the tile out to a wood floor, pick some type of oak.

oak always looks great w/these colors

and dont forget..while the broader range of ideas starts flowing..you can at some cost ..but not terrible..replace/redo the island to obtain drawers as your space lacks that..... its a nice Improvement
