Is texting the new phone scam?

I got the same alert on my PC. I delete about 30 emails a day. Mostly advertising...but a lot of scams.

I get maybe 2 junk text messages a week. They're easy enough to delete. Junk phone calls, about the same number.

nicole, you probably know that the only way to effectively stop ad emails is to unsubscribe. One by one, once for each sender. Legit businesses offer that option, at the bottom of the message. It does work..

As I said somewhere before, the only ones I get are from what seem to be prostitutes who want to meet me at Starbuck's, and I never go to Starbuck's or even drink coffee.

I block each number one by one, for whatever good that does.

If I got a questionable message, I would do a reverse look-up of the phone number.

I never answer calls that say that they are from a particular state.

I got an email recently saying that my Microsoft account had been hacked, although I could see no evidence of it. However, I did change my password, and I haven't got that message again.

The most annoying text messages I get are ones that simply say "Hi!" I block those immediately.

I get loads of spam texts and calls daily. Even on the weekends. Right now it's mostly texts, calling me by my dads name, asking if he wants to sell his house. I will occasionally get one asking ME if I want to sell mine. I just delete them.

I have to keep my phone on do not disturb and only let calls and texts from people in my contacts list actually ring. The rest stay silent. I just get so many scam and spam calls and texts I would never get any sleep during the day if I didn't use the do not disturb feature. Its insane.

This is exactly what scammers want you to do. Never ever, ever click on links. If you are genuinely awaiting a delivery go to the company’s bona fide website yourself and enquire. Same with any incoming message from people purporting to be your bank, insurance co. etc. Just do not respond in any way to those messages.

I was almost fooled by a similar text last week - it appeared to be from the USPS about a delivery delay. But as soon as I read it and saw it was from usps.net, I realized what it was. It was also asking me to input my name and home address.

It's so true that the chances of someone expecting delivery of a package are very high these days, so that's pretty good scheme.

I understand that these text/email scammers have become industries in some countries in Asia and are using what amounts to slave labor to push this stuff 24/7. They keep doing it because the ROI is pretty good.

@Elmer J Fudd...Several have broken links...ie: NY Lighting. The unsubscribe doesn't work...I've sent emails to customer service. People are still sending the "I am in charge of a million dollars I want to send you". weird 😁 Every time I visit the Charish or 1stDibs site the cookies put me back on the email list. Fiverr...a decorating site, made me sign an agreement to let them send me ads.....

Re: advertising emails - I just let them go to my junk mail inbox and they get deleted automatically after 30 days. I do scan that junk mail folder daily to see if there's something in there that's not junk, but it's a lot less work.

I always go directly to UPS or USPS site to check tracking. Especially when I would get that type of message.

Some clever spammers are now including an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of their messages, so be sure to verify that the message is legit before doing so. Clicking on one that is not can cause you a heap o' trouble.

I got a text today that said my "Amazon" acct had an issue. DELETE!!!

I do not give out my cell to packages, or anyone really. It's why I pay to have a land line.

I got spam phone calls all the time on my land line, more often than on my cell- lots of phishing. Scam emails, texts, calls, so annoying, ugh.

I get emails about a lovely young woman from Russia that “wants to make me very happy!”

In order to make me “very happy”, she would have to clean the house, top to bottom, wash all the blinds and windows, wash and re-paint the walls in three rooms, declutter and clean the closets, basement and garage, power wash the house exterior, then she could start on the garden.

She could retire from her original profession. I would pay her very well and she could live in the basement for free if she wants to take some college classes.

Nicole, again I suspect you know this, but the best way to keep from receiving garbage is to be protective your email address, giving it only to businesses where your communication is important. Use a second email for all other purposes.

I've done this for some time and it does work. Use a second, throw-away address for sites (like this one) that require an email but messages from which you would pay much less atention to if any at all. In my "real" email account there are no ads, no solicitations, no bulk. Even some sites that are essential (financial and investment institutions, insurance companies, household utilitiy providers, charities, etc., sometimes need to be coached. As with, No marketing messages, no special offers, no solicitations, nothing but statements and matters that are urgent. It does work.

BIL got a call from DHS saying they were coming to arrest him…He replied “please do. I have 3 teen boys, their girfriends all hanging out, eating me out of house and home and I need a break!

That's fun. But even better would be not to respond at all. If you answer, the phishing outfit know they've hit on a genuine phone number. The crooks can now sell the number on and with it the information about the subscriber supplied by your BIL.

I just got this one and i dont know what to make of it. Im pretty sure its a scam but perhaps coincidentally, it arrived while i was on the phone with a new doctor's office, making an appointment. I gave them my cell number as my best contact number. However, the area code is Wisconsin and I am nowhere near there. Anyone else get this? I have no idea what raml might be. of course, i did not respond.

We get out of area/state calls from doctors because they hire companies to do the reminder calls. Took a while to get used to the calls from Colorado for the eye dr appointments in PA. Detired, just ignore it for now, and see if it comes up again.

I suspect dedtired's message is genuine. I tell all medical people I Do Not Want *reminders*. I'm a big girl, and I have a calendar.

Well, you are right! It was a legit message because i got another one from the doctors office from the same number.

I dont mind being reminded once, in fact i appreciate it but it gets tiresome when i get a text, email and phone call all regarding the same appointment. Enough already.
