It's easy when it's somebody else's
Comments (20)The sketch is not meant to be realism, but to illustrate some of the general concepts I spoke of previously. (I already see a couple of places I would tweak it. But it'll have to do as is.) In spite of the fact that it will likely be followed by some form of berating condescension from one of the forum's self-important contingents, you can probably glean some thoughts and ideas from it. I don't think of Rudbeckia as "wispy" as it has a more solid mass. But you'll be the best judge of what appeals to you. There is ALWAYS room for Rudbeckia somewhere! I'm just saying I'd prefer not to feel "hemmed in" on a fairly narrow porch. I have never had to kill pampas, but Roundup sounds like a good place to start. It might be a process as opposed to a one-time hit....See MoreWelcome Message draft
Comments (31)I also just want to call out a thanks to the hard work WC8 has put into this - I think sweetcicely put it really nicely. Cj - that's a really good point. I really do try, but I sometimes forget to append "I think that..." or "From my limited experience..." to the beginnings of my post, which I think is important in ensuring that the reader knows that any advice being given is a guess or at least from limited experience. Even if it's neither these two things, anyone not growing in my conditions should take any information I give with a grain of salt, and so that little "I'm not sure, but this is what I think" really serves as a nice reminder to the reader. Sometimes I see it as a liability waiver! Re the nature of people visiting the forum - with the invention of the internet, people tend to 'ask' more than research. It's gone from going to the library to checking out a book, to going to google and searching for a key word, to just posting questions on forums and waiting for answers. I think the welcome draft is fantastically detailed and has so much great advice and information, but as others have said, may not be efficient, keeping in mind the mentality of the people who come here asking for questions. Is it possible to have a single line at the top of the page in a very prominent place saying: "Thanks for visiting the forum! If you have some time before posting your question, please READ THIS" and link to the page you've drafted? That way people who do click on the link will expect to be presented with something they need to read - if they do read all of it, they'll be that much wiser and if they don't, then there's no hurt feelings since it's not the first thing that jumps into their face when they visit the site, so it's less....foreboding....See MoreOT Need Advice About Unexpected Messages
Comments (10)Celeste, sorry to be so late posting to your threads, was going to try to catch up on that today. After this happened, I went back and deleted the one picture of my husband and me that I mistakenly had with the flower pictures. The big joke is this pic was taken 40 years ago when my hubby and I were young and cute--LOL. Obviously, we don't look anything like that now, but I took it off anyway. I don't want any personal type photos on Photobucket if these sleazy people can messsage us this way. This sounds like some sort of scan where if you were to answer them, it would cost a lot of money. This may only be a guess, but it has to be some sort of fraud. I am going to delete the messages from the e-mails and put a password on my account. It is a sorry world we live in now when I can't even have my pictures out in case any gardening person can view them and comment. That has happened before, but no problem, a person who liked a picture of one of our daylilies. Looks like those days are gone now. Since you have family pictures on Photobucket, you might want to rethink it, too. Now I need to get a password put on my account, and list it as private. I am also going to contact Photobucket and let them know about this, see what they say. Avedon...See MoreMessages Not shown as Read
Comments (18)Yes. Its true, I must confess. I really like my roses but I am obsessed with my daylilies. Fortunately I do not have to choose between them but if I had to have only one it would be daylilies over roses. There are times I don't go to the roses forums for weeks. In the winter I really don't go much and then start to hang out on rose forum lots as the spring planting, pruning and such goes on until the BIG EVENT. Big event being spring flush. I really can't immagine not having the roses gardens that I have now because they really are jaw dropping beautiful in the spring flush. Plus they bloom on and off all summer giving me color in my gardens. But I also have no great interest in making new or more roses beds. If I want new roses, I will rework spots that have them now and take out something I do not like that much. Afew weeks ago I dug up 19 roses to make new room for daylilies. Some of those 19 were replanted were I took one out (not favored) and moved another in but many were gone, gone, gone. The whole left hand side of the front of the front yard gardens is going to be daylilies. The other side, a mixture of rose beds and daylily beds. Daylilies are my favorite, no question....See MoreOutsidePlaying
