Help! Need siding + front door design suggestions
My partner and I are planning to replace our home's old T1-11 siding with vinyl Alside, preferably in a vertical format to support the style of the home. We're also replacing our three doors, but need the most help with the front entrance since that's obviously more the statement piece from the front. Below is our current exterior:
So far, this is the best mockup we've come up with (we used Provia.com's 2D design center), but we're wondering if anyone has alternative suggestions. Thoughts? Note: the roof doesn't need replacement right now but may be replaced down the road. The front porch will be replaced after siding due to wood deterioration, so you can also ignore or contribute to that part of the design. Thanks!

last yearYou will not get vinyl board and batten in that length. Some companies have a 12'6" length, but Alside only offers 10' length. The siding has to fit into a J channel to allow expansion and contraction or you have to add a 'belly band' to stop and start the siding.
IMO the color positions should be reversed. I would not want to walk up to a dark entrance at night. I would consider a lighter entrance when compared to the balance of the house.
Figure out when to start and stop the vinyl before you make your final decision.

Comments (18)thanks for the ideas. after a few days of work heres where I am at. I fixed the curves and made them larger more "sweeping" ... It looks better on the eye. I also got a cubic yard of eggrock and filled in the bed against the house. heres the left section of my driveway where I have 5 italian cypress trees planted along the fence. I put the rest of my eggrock on this narrow planting bed. The trees are evenly spaced although the camera angel is playing tricks. As far as the far right corner of the eggrock bed where the banana trees are. Next month I am gowing to my grandparents farm down in south florida where he grows washingtonia palm trees. I am hopping to bring one back with me (8 -10ft) or so. If i can get it up here, i will be relocating the banana tree and elephant eears and the misc lirope to the rear house (next project). that why that lil corner doesnt have egg rock down yet, plus the rock looks funny comming to the base of a banana tree. plus after the fisrt freeze in winter it turns to mush and a washingtonia palm would be great there. Comments (9)Since the houses you've shown have little landscaping, and since that's my interest, I don't have a whole lot to offer other than to again suggest that the entire hedge needs removal across the front of your house. Note the wide walkways in both of your examples. I would do something similar from the parking pad to your porch leaving a wide entry pad in front of the porch, similar to how wide the steps are in both of your examples, such as from the wall with the door over to the center post. Consider whether continuing the walkway out the road makes sense; does anyone walk to your house or park down by the road? Add a pair of tall pots on a firm surface off the porch to frame the entry, one in front of the pillar and one in front of the wall just to the left of the door, but not where it will hide the door. Choose pots that fit your aesthetic and with colors that work with whatever you do with the house. If the brick on your house goes down to near the ground, put in a bed of evergreen groundcover from the right pot over to the end of the porch and from the left pot over to the shrub at the end of the house. Be sure the bed has a cleanly maintained edge to keep it looking tidy. If you want some shrubs, you can add them to the groundcover bed (being sure that the bed is deep enough to accommodate whatever you choose) or place shrubs or trees further out into the yard to give some feeling of shelter from the road, and consider using some of the same plants used in the garden to the left will provide continuity. If you live in an area with a lot of snow and ice, choose your plants across the front of the house to be able to tolerate snow getting dumped on them, especially if you decide to go with a metal roof. I have a similar area that has groundcovers, perennials that die back for winter, and some shrubs that if damaged by roof dumps can be cut to near the ground and will grow within a few weeks. In doing landscaping, do the home work first such as roofing, painting or repairs, then do hardscape such as walkways, and finally do bed prep and planting. Choose plants that won't overgrow the space they are planted in to reduce pruning work. If you choose to paint your brick to get the feel of your examples, be aware that you will have taken a low maintenance surface and turned it into one that will need ongoing maintenance - cleaning and painting as needed which will add time and expense. I am not wild about your current black shutters and white trim. Perhaps start by choosing colors with a less stark contrast between the brick and the trim such as a sage or the color of the siding on the ell and painting all your trim that same color. Comments (13)To me, what looks odd is the big bay window on the small part and a smaller window on the bigger part of the front. I’d at least make them symmetrical, like in this picture. Notice too how the siding is lapboards on the lower and board and batten on the upper part of the pitch. Also, color choices will make a big difference. This is my (roughly) idea, only I'd use that teak color above, or something like this walnut.
And, you could paint the door a diff color if you like.
Or, this natural wood color w/this type of veritcal siding:
are you doing a diff roof color? if and when you do, go w/a charcoala metal roof would look cool tool.
go dark just like this. with vertical siding if you like (tese are more like batten panels)

this one is similar to yours, minus the stone accent. They did add it to the after. Notice the vertical siding on the upper portion, (and the black roof)
Landscaping will be 50% of the overall look, so try and copy some of these front yard ideas too.designer Lauren Leiss did a nice makeover on hers.

Similar color stone like you have. they went w/a warm charcoal color siding. Try Kendall Charcoal
This one is also very similar to yours. look at the windows. same size. also notice the front door w/the windows right over it. Look what propsed in the after rendition:
Brick and Batten has many make over renditions of that style. pay close attention to what they've used. You'll notice, they all used a dark color. if you don't like the black or charcoal, look into a dark forest green. (SW Jasper is nice)
This one is somewhat like the color combo you want to use. To me, the warm wood planks (whether real wood or a composite cedar, is a must)
back yard idea:
similar roof color w/the lighter gray siding. I don't like this as much as the dark siding
I really like this type of siding, and this color. (please, no vinyl. these homes were all done w/natural cedar siding. doing vinyl would be a downgrade

For the contrasting faux wood siding, we're looking at using brands like WoodTone or TruCedar steel siding to resemble real wood without the cost and maintenance of real wood.
This is one of the doors my partner and I both agree upon but the hue doesn't seem quite right yet. We're getting our doors replaced through ProVia so our options, although varied, are limited to them if that helps.
I'm starting to see why people pay for design consultation (i.e.: Brick & Batten) for exterior remodeling projects... Just the slightest change makes a huge difference and frankly, we don't have all the answers. Any feedback is much appreciated!
