I just can't see a 9x12 in there as that would then mean the carpet going into the walkway to our bedroom. I do have a runner there now if the carpet has any kind of pattern to it on the edges, I think that would look off. Since the DR part is basically 10'8" x 10'8", there would only be a foot on each side of the table with the width with a 8X10. That means the back legs of the china cabinet would be off the rug and the front would be on it. Perhaps the same thing with the buffet on one corner. I found an octagonal one that is 7'9" that I was hoping would work. That seemed to work when I pulled out the chairs and sat back down. I guess because you come from the LR into that narrower part of the room, I think the larger the rug is the more croweded it would look, esp. with all the tile that is showing in the LR. BTW, I love my tile, it doesn't show abit of dirt and is easy to damp mop but just wanted to add a little warmth to the room. Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming. T

I like the new arrangement. It might help to tape out a space for the area rug and measure. It's nice to have the rug go about 1/3 the way under the furniture. An 8x10 may work. Can you post a close up of the fabric on the chair?

Let's get you some answers.... I'll comment first to get the ball rolling. I like your room. Yes, add another sofa table to the back of the sectional that faces the room (either a twin of what you have, or a longer table) Your end tables are fine, but a little small for your lamps. If you want new end tables, I'd choose rounded ones to mimic the round lamps. However, that will compromise your storage (Is there anything in those baskets? Do you use the baskets? Add some snuggly throw blankets in your colors. A sectional is perfect for TV/movie viewing. I'd like to see a pattern in either a rug OR wall art. You said you have a pool..... Bring that relaxing feel indoors with this Feizy "ocean rug" (Feizy Lorraine collection) It looks like sunlight reflected off water. Happy to help, a 9 x 12 will be best. Think about how you use your current family room. Do you have friends over for movie night or games? If you can seat at least 5, preferably 6 you will be happier with the space. You can have 2 swivel chairs, one on each side of the sofa. You also have seating at the kitchen island and if you have not purchased those stools yet, look for swivel stools so TV viewing is comfortable from there. The placement on your plan for a 9 x 12 is a bit off...I would center it on the back wall though I realize you may have a piece of furniture on the wall in back of the sofa which is not on your current plan. All the best to you, I am sure that the room will look great.... and I am sure that your husband would love a bigger TV :p PS: Since your room is not very large, do not use large scale furniture and make some templates from newspaper or a brown paper roll from the Hardware store in the size of the furnishings you are considering to make sure that you will be happy with the layout and have enough room for the pieces you like. It will make it easier for you to visualize the space, and the furniture placement.
