Rug size and furniture placement help please!

I want to put a rug in my family room. Because it is an odd size, I may end up going the carpet remnant/binding route. My question is, where would you put the rug? I could get one sized 12x12 that the entire sectional, end tables, and coffee table would be on. Is that the best way to go? Should the end tables be on the rug?

My husband built the tv wall unit and it will also have an upper section with shelves on either side and above the wall mounted tv.

This room really drives me crazy so I’m open to any other furniture arrangement ideas. The wall across from the clock is a large glass slider that overlooks our pool so I’d like to keep that view from being blocked. That area is also a walkway to guest bedroom and main floor bathroom.

Should I get rid of the end tables although the lamps are used every night? Longer sofa table in the back? Sofa table behind sectional on clock wall? Sofa table around both backs of sectional?

I totally regret buying the sectional......

Let's get you some answers.... I'll comment first to get the ball rolling.

I like your room. Yes, add another sofa table to the back of the sectional that faces the room (either a twin of what you have, or a longer table) Your end tables are fine, but a little small for your lamps. If you want new end tables, I'd choose rounded ones to mimic the round lamps. However, that will compromise your storage (Is there anything in those baskets? Do you use the baskets? Add some snuggly throw blankets in your colors.

A sectional is perfect for TV/movie viewing. I'd like to see a pattern in either a rug OR wall art. You said you have a pool..... Bring that relaxing feel indoors with this Feizy "ocean rug" (Feizy Lorraine collection) It looks like sunlight reflected off water. I've seen this rug in two different blue colors ocean and midnight blue. There is a sea green color: mariner, as well.

I'd like to see a relationship between your wall art and your seating area... If you're open to changing your wall art, then these abstract Ikat prints are colorful, yet they won't compete with your pool view. They have a "I bought this on a vacation feel". We have a similar issue in our family room. We have a bank of windows, a doorway that leads into our dining room and the space opposite the fireplace is open to our kitchen area. I am not a fan of TVs over the fireplace. I just don't think it looks good. We have windows on either side of our fireplace, so we really didn't have many options for TV placement. We moved to the home with the furniture (sectional and chair/ottoman) and we really didn't want to purchase new seating. I had a custom table made to run the length of the sectional and we had a sisal made to fill the entire space (which actually made the room appear larger) We just upgraded our TV from a 46 to 50 inch - we are considering a wider corner unit to better fill the space, but for now, it works. Could you still do the sectional, with the sofa table behind (as shown in your plan) and then have a chair (maybe swivel) in the corner (along the wall where the TV would be) -- similar to what we have in our room....

Look for a sofa with narrow arms. Wide arms are a huge waste of space in a small room. If you want a sofa for someone to sleep on, consider also getting either a tight-seat sofa or at least a bench cushion; much more comfortable for sleeping. I think you want an inside length of no less than 68". Looks like you want something contemporary. I would place the crib on the other wall so the light won't be sneaking in and waking baby. The long was next to the door is good too as you could peek in without walking across the room and waking baby.

Your house and new doors are beautiful! I agree with getting a rug just a bit wider than the doors. I think a brass and glass accent table beside the doors would look so pretty in place of your current one. They’d repeat the lovely gold fixtures and be a nice balance with the bigger, heavier entry table across the room. (First is on Overstock, second on Ballard Designs ... but a true vintage one would be great, too.)
