What is an ice course?

I write a column in the newspaper called Looking Back. In the 100 years ago section there are lots of stories about parties in people's homes. There are lots of descriptions about the flowers used to decorate the homes and what the hostess served. Sometimes they mention an ice course. I have heard of lemon ice used as a palate cleanser, but I don't think that is what they are referring to because sometimes the only thing mentioned on the menu are chicken salad sandwiches and an ice course. Any ideas on what an ice course would be? Could it be ice cream? I have googled and not come up with anything satisfying. At this point in 1922 there was an ice house in my little town and ice was delivered to homes when they needed it.
