Another seedling, moving seedlings question, FFOs, clump

Seedling Question: how long til you move a seedling from one place to another? I'm sure my first batch several years ago could have been moved long before I did.

new Seedling Kent's Favorite Two x ?

I thought it was times Forsysth Flying Dragon but realized after planting it they are different ploids so a bee had to have also pollenated. Pale melon-pink, 4 1/2 inches

Third seedling from Carmen Renee x VT the Last Melon. Different from the last one but still very nice.

Previous one that I loved:

In High Regard, brand new from a local trade; very short this year.

Purple Riot rioting

Regal Finale. This may be its finale. For 5 or more years now it has barely had any buds; it was even moved from shady spot to sun to no avail. Too bad.

You can move seedlings any time. I've moved them after one year with no problem. Most hybridizers move them after the third year. I never have any place to move them to, so most of my seedlings stay put for four or five years.

That's a shame Regal Finale has performed so poorly for you. Mine is performing poorly this year because of a lack of rain in May and June, but it has performed well for at least 15 years here. In High Regard is pretty. I bet it will be fantastic next year. That's interesting that you got such a light colored seedling from Kent's Favorite Two. I like it. The lavender seedlings are nice too!

Purple Riot looks as though it has good substance. I wouldn't be concerned about In High Regard being short. Especially this year, the newly divided are short.

Thank you mandolls and started_with_bean. I have a feeling that I have seeded myself into a corner, so to speak. Way too ambitious for my first year of serious flowers from seed growing project. I started with a tray that holds 72 inch and half cells plus about dozen 3" pots. Well, all those 72 cells had to be transplanted to larger pots plus some, like lobelia, were split. In short, I started with 10" X 46" area of seedlings and now I am at about 10" X 120" and growing. And now I have to transplant tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. No light for all of them, for sure. Vegetables will have the priority, no question about that. Hmm, I guess that I am over my head this year. Check the pictures on my blog and it will give you an idea about my dilemma. Roberto, It just means we have a significantly shorter growing period for adeniums--they actually tolerate low temperatures if they are eased into it. This last autumn, for instance, I did not bring my adult plants into the shelter until temperatures were going consistently down to about 10C at night and they did alright. However, I did put one in the garage and another one I left out a little longer (it was being treated for mealy bugs) while the rest went into the house. The garage plant was actually crunchy when I checked it in January lol (ice crystals in the trunk) and the other one died slowly when I brought it indoors as temperatures went down to just above freezing at night. For seedlings, I think the best rule of thumb is this: when outdoor temperatures at night go below your lowest indoor temperature, bring them indoors. In my case, that convergence is at around 16C. From what I have learned so far in this forum, I have not seen an upper limit to the temperature that adeniums will tolerate as long as it is watered well. Short growth periods, I am betting, probably also means less opportunity to bloom. But that matters less to me so my plants do not get any sort of bloom-boosting intervention at all. 110F. Yikes. Nikki, Glad to hear you kitty is not suffering ill effects from the dl. Hope he gets through his surgeries OK. Virgo45, Thanks for posting again. It's hard to tell w/my monitor but those last too look like near-whites. I would not have imagined that from their parents other than just that you are working in the pastel range which I'd suspect near whites being more common there than say in a darker red/purple range. Mark, good luck with your auctions. I've noticed that traffic seems slower on the auctions after 1/1. I've seen a couple other posts here that a few people are trying to lay-off the auction frenzy until spring. At least one seller has told me she does not plan to offer more auctions this year. Maybe someone who has been around the auctions longer could enlighten us if that's an annual pattern. It certainly means that the bidding wars are less frequent so maybe there's a chance to get what you want at the basement prices?

My favorites are Purple Riot and your lavender seedling with the corduroy texture......This may not be any help, but you could perhaps pot any seedling you are concerned with IF you had a greenhouse/attached garage to overwinter it in. So says the pot lady in zone 7a..........Maryl

Thanks for posting IN HIGH REGARD. I will have to go and look for mine. It is a favorite and it will reach its registered stats next year. I remember getting mine in the fall and the next summer, it was hitting its registration stats.

In High regard is very nice, I like the delicate coloring. I like your VT seedlings, I remember you said the one I asked about was a late….how about the rest of the VT seedlings?

Thanks all for your responses. Sherry, all my VT seedlings are late but not extra late like the VTs. That is fine, i'm happy either way. The thing I really want to happen is the crazy amount of budding like the VTs. Time will tell.

Brad, we leave our seedlings in place for three years before we move them. Occasionally, if we find a really special one, we will move it earlier.

One consideration is how close your seedlings are planted initially. Our are about 5 inches apart so they need to be moved to give them the room to increase. If you plant them farther apart, you don't need to move them until you want to line them out.

Purple Riot is very pretty in the clump. I like seedling Third seedling from Carmen Renee x VT the Last Melon. Of course, the one you love is a pretty thing and Regal Finale not doing well is a shame. I moved one of mine that wasn't doing what it should today and hope for improvement next year. It just happens sometimes even when they are moved. Nice post, Brad.
