Adult Birthday Party Vent
Comments (43)All parties are ultimations...be there or miss the party :) Come on now, that does not mean "be there or miss the party and I'll never speak to you again" it just means the party is on Saturday and I'd love to see you, but if I don't we'll see you another time. :) The party takes place on whatever date it's set. I wouldn't call that an ultimatim, but maybe that's just me. I too cherish time with girlfriends W/O kids. I rarely get it (two days to date since my son was born) so it's a big deal for me. Just last night I invited my bunco girlfriends to come down for a bunco retreat at our new house sometime. I'll be leaving them and would love to have them come visit, but I didn't offer to foot the bill. It didn't even occur to me. And as said above, had it been reverse, me being invited, I'd almost have been insulted to have someone pay my bill for me unless there was a logical reason (and friends traveling to a casual party is not a logical reason). I know that of the twelve ladies I invited last night that maybe six or eight will attend. They are busy, and timing is always a challenge, and perhaps expense as well, but I won't be offended if someone does not join us for the weekend. I just want to see my friends and enjoy sharing my new home with them...not much different than wanting to share a special weekend (birthday) with friends really :) and nothing to get upset about....See MoreTeaching a Friend Guidelines of Friendship
Comments (16)I think you are being very kind by including her and trying to help her. I agree with the others in that if it is getting too much, then don't invite her to the social gathering. She might be just a one on one friend. If she has the means, I see nothing wrong with you telling her what is expected of her. It is coming from a nurturing place. It is interesting how some people perceive things. I have an older sister who has above average intelligence and was an A student. She is married to a doctor. Yet, you would not know they are successful by the way they live and how they dress. It's fine to be comfortable in what you wear, but when you are invited to a wedding or special occasion, you should be appropriate. Once when we were discussing what she was going to bring on a cruise, she pointed to her polyester top and matching pants and said well I have this outfit.(It was something you would wear to the gym) I honestly don't get it, but when she is invited to something that is hosted by me, I start emailing her telling her what we are all wearing etc, and she now comes appropriately dressed. All this should not really matter, but I do feel that how you dress shows you are respecting the occasion. So, even growing up in the same household, kids can turn out very differently. We might never know why your friend doesn't pick up the same cues as the rest of us, but it is great that you are there to help her along the way....See MoreWeek 117 - To Vent or Not to Vent - What is your hood like?
Comments (46)A guy in my daughter's HOA tried to "ban" my vehicle from parking anywhere in the community other than inside DD's garage because it was an "eyesore." It was an inexpensive Ford, about 10 years old, but no dings, dents, or dirt anywhere. He was over ruled and forced to apologize to me, wherein he mentioned a couple of times how angry his wife was at him, haha! The last HOA community I lived in made us fix two shingles that appeared (to them) to be "out of alignment." Oh, did I mention it was the roof of our DOG HOUSE? Never again. Never. Again. Onto the topic at hand. I currently have a vented hood of indeterminate brand. I'm pretty sure it's the original hood in my 37 yr old home, and I'm positive it's never been cleaned (until I moved in). If you recall, I bought this house from hoarders who never, ever cleaned their house. Even after I paid people to clean the whole range (electric coil stovetop), including the hood, it is the most vile, disgusting thing I've ever seen. It's also frighteningly loud. I'm certain it doesn't pull up anything; not grease, not odors, nothing. When I remodel the kitchen, I'll most likely stay with a vented hood since there's already the hole in the roof. I would reconsider if there wasn't a way to use the same hole. I know this topic has been passionately argued over for years on this forum. And I mean passionate! But I've had the recirculating vents before and, at least in my case, have found them adequate (please don't execute me at dawn for saying that!). There are a couple of secrets to keep them working well, and I assume this would also apply to OTR recirculating micros. First, many of them recirculate the air through a charcoal filter. You have to replace that filter once in a while! :-) Just like furnace or A/C filters, if you never replace them, they get dirty and cease to clean the air; in fact, they make it worse after a while. Second, while you're at it, go ahead and clean the other parts too. If you rent, make the management replace the filter when it's due. For now, my "vent" is the two windows in my kitchen. I happen to think my cooking smells good, so the windows are basically to keep a very sensitive smoke alarm from going off. Russ, where can I order one of those pot roast pillows?...See MoreFriendship question
Comments (53)I did reply to K's text. Today we went to lunch and I hugged her as I left. She's feeling better. No harm done. K is very emotional-she feels left out when a waiter refills someones glass but not hers-she takes it personally. She's called me in tears because she felt someone at work slighted her because they didn't tell her good morning when they passed in the hall She knows that V and I do so much together and V posts pictures of us and vice versa. I also post pics of K, too! I've been very fond of her over the years, but I'd never call her my best friend. My DH is my best friend too, until I met V and I realized we were soul sisters. We talk nearly every day, and we spend every bit of free time we can with one another. Call it juvenile but I won't apologize for having found someone in my middle age life who I'm probably closer to than my own DH. At least with her I can gripe about him! K and I have been very long time friends, but I've never felt that spark with her. As an adult I had one other friend who I once told that now I know what it's like living with me-we were so close, so much alike and she was my best friends, but she passed away several years ago. K also knew her and knew of our relationship, but never said anything about feeling jealous. I have a bunch of really great, sweet friends who I'd lay down my life for, but they know they're not my "best friend". I don't believe it changes the dynamic of our relationships one bit. Many have their DH's as their best friend, and some, like me, have a female BF as well. I think I can say that my friends all know how much I value them, I let it be known frequently. As to my FB, I've got a limited number of friends on there. Those who know I'm an open book and share in my quirks and foibles. Only people I care to share with are my friends, just like IRL. I share less, actually, on FB than I do IRL. But each person uses FB as they chose. I don't understand the people who have 735 'friends', I just don't have the time for that. ETA the 'announcement' wasn't like that. I'd mentioned I went to a store that is in the same town V lives in and I said it was a great way to spend some quality time with my best bud who I don't get to see often enough I didn't even call her out specifically!...See More- 4 years ago
