July 2014 what looks good/bad/awful in your garden?
Comments (45)Hi all, sorry for the late reply, I was away in Santa Fe, NM for a week. Love that town! Great new pics and updates, thanks so much for sharing them all. I too am amazed that you keep that jade happy outside! I have to keep them cowering indoors in summer, LOL. Neat caper pic, Jon, what conditions do you give it and how long have you had it outside? I only recently saw them in a greenhouse a few weeks ago at the terrific Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. Neat! Awesome cacti pics too, Mike. You're obviously doing something right. Awesome pics and great blooms. Love love love! Mswillis, your veggie garden looks so happy and productive. I'm envious! Thanks for posting it and keep us updated! Not fancy, but here's my own-root variegated, contorted Euphorbia lactea outside on the patio, in a "wash pot" or "bean pot". I've become addicted to these pots as they're really hard to tip over. Happy gardening all! Grant...See MoreEnd of July already! Garden notes July 27th -
Comments (6)We had a lot of rain in the area over the weekend but it skipped over our house. My yard is really starting to dry up. I've been watering quite a bit. I HOPE that doesn't encourage mosquitoes Proudgm. I think they would need water that stands for a few days to breed in and my puddles dry up pretty quickly. Spray your hubby with the hose if he says that again. lol Oakleaf - I saw LOTS of Black Swallowtails last year and the year before but they've been very scarce this year for some reason. I have bronze fennel and rue planted for them for host plants but have only seen a couple caterpillars that I think got eaten before they could finish. : ( I also haven't seen very many Buckeye butterflies this year which are usually very common. I've seen more yellow Tiger Swallowtails this year though. Those are so pretty. I was pulling weeds this week and found my Chinese Astilbe that I thought died the year before last. What a nice surprise. It's very small though and needs to be moved to another spot. I also found a little sprig of epimedium that I thought was toast after the late freeze. It sure took a long time to come up again. Kaye - Hope you're enjoying your retirement. Some people don't get started on gardening until after they retire. You've got a nice head start....See MoreJuly 17th - Dusting off the garden hoses
Comments (7)I don't know about all of you but some of my flower beds have become "sunny". I mean that the ice storms have broken so many large tree limbs off that the have way too much sun now to be shade beds. I thaink that is some of my flowers problem. I started watering last week and some of my plants seem to be starting. Although I always grow sunflowers for the grandchildren, I say that but I really love them too. but they are almost to the roof top this year! They normally don't quite make it that tall. guess we'll wait and see. We go out to check them every day. I did some winter sow as well for the first time. I have to say I did like the idea and I had some success, but I am one of those that I like some instant color. I know I won't get that form this os I think I will get some annuals to place in with them this year. When I do that again next year I will know for the get go and plant some in there to begin with. I planted a lot of new bulbs this year and got all the green tops but no flowers so sure hope nothing gets them before spring! Proudgm, what is this "tomatoes in upside down 5 gallon bucket"? Is it like those bags? Where did you "hand" it? You have me thinking up all kinds of crazy things. that's not always a good thing for me, lol. Oh yes and my elephant ears are doing so great this year too. sure wish I could figure out why every thing else is so stunted. Christie, so sorry to hear about your families loss. I know a new friend will find you when it is the right time. My Mahala is still hanging in there. I give her shots and a lot of meds. she has goo days and bad, but she isn't in pain other when it's cold or rainy. Like me w/arthritis. Comments (21)OK, I have uploaded all my pictures and written most of my comments down twice now and had issues where safari reloaded and wiped out my post making me start over. Im going to do this in 3 or 4 seperate posts in case it happens again so I wont have to start over completely. My pineapples are doing great. I tried to force them to fruit about four weeks ago there is absolutely no sign of success. I have read that it can take up to six weeks to flower after doing the "apple technique" but I'm thinking it didnt work. The One in the middle was just planted a couple days ago and is already getting new leaves. I'm probably going to need to transplant the larger one to a bigger pot or into the ground soon. My wisteria is doing much better now that I put shade cloth on the west side of it. The people at Moonvalley nursery I still swear to me that it can be a good vine for my pergola and can take the sun as long as I establish a good deep root system but it just seems like the foliage might be too delicate for our sun. If anyone has seen these take full sun or live on top of the Pergola in our area Id love to know about it. I may need to just end up replacing it with Tangerine crossvine....See MoreChristopher CNC
