Design Dilemma Remodeling Kitchens

silestone sunlit days?

Anyone with experience with silestone sunlit days? They have five options that are more homogeneous than most quartz. I think it would look good with our kitchen remodel where we have a feature island and want a neutral countertop around the outside.

These specific stones seem different than tyoical quartz but im not sure if they are.

Anyone with experience? Durable? Chips? Etc?

Attached is the quartzite we are doing for the island with representative cabinets. Lower cabibets are all brown and uppers are creamy white. Don’t have a good idea of backsplash yet but would take advice!

You have two different cabinet colors and you also want two counters?

I would do it all in the quarzite.

Thanks. Yeah we considered that but it is quite the quartzite and i think too much. My thought was that a muted color on the perimeter would balance it. Also we only have 2 upper cabinets …the ones in the photo. The other wall with the window will be a simple neutral backsplash. But thank you for your input.

One of the managers of the Silestone and granite place that we got our Silestone counters from stopped by today to check up on how well we like our counters (we love them!). While he was here I asked him about caring for our counters. He suggested Windex, Formula 409, a mild soap and water or Simple Green (either the regular or the one specifically made for counters/stone). He uses the regular Simple Green on his own Silestone. One thing he mentioned that I hadn't heard before was to keep hot cast iron pots, pans and skillets off the counters. Apparently, cast iron heats hotter and keeps the heat longer than most regular pans. The quick heat transference from pot to counter could potentially damage the counters, he said.

I had Hanstone quartz countertops installed in my kitchen 2 years ago. I was there for the installation. I looked for any chips in the edges (I did a square edge) and also paid close attention to the way they finished off the seams. Note that the installers were able to use the same "grout" for the seam and for filling in the little areas where the stone fragments might have fallen out while they cut the edge. And before the installers left, I wiped down the counters and ran my hands all over them, especially the edges, to be sure nothing was damaged. Good luck! try_hard ...

@Beth Would you mind posting photos of your completed kitchen? The marble slab photo you posted above in this thread is GORGEOUS! I’ve been a “stalker” on Houzz now for awhile - you give some of the best advice I’ve read on here - especially when someone desperately needs help trying to pull elements together (many times bc some element has not turned out to be exactly what the person was expecting - and he/she is GREATLY disappointed). You consistently present great ideas - and, obviously, spend a lot of time helping people out. You are my favorite contributor! I’ve been a “stalker” on Houzz now for awhile - you give some of the best advice I’ve read on here - especially when someone desperately needs help trying to pull elements together (many times bc some element has not turned out to be exactly what the person was expecting - and he/she is GREATLY disappointed). Here is the good slab installed. Kitchen is still a work in progress. It's a beach house so I am doing it as cheap and as crisp as possible. Cabinets are basic ikea. Second photo shows a close up of the veining.And then bottom photo is a pic of the bad slab (just to see how different it was!)And here you can see how broken the veining looked close up

Once it’s in the countertops the quartzite won’t be too much . I’m not for mixing natural stone with man made engineered countertops. The man made quartz will look more like Formica next to the island. I’d either do all in the quartzite or do butcher block countertops.

I mixed both quartz and marble. There is no rule. if you like it, do it. The quartz doesn't look like 'Formica', so yeah, get what you like!

(don't even think about backsplash tile until you get your countertops installed)

I don't mind the quartzite choice, but I think you can pick a better looking slab than that one. I don't think that gray/green is the best choice w/your cabinets and warm wood floors.

Maybe Super White dolomite

Or Taj Majal quartztite, with a whiter quartz color, would be a better option w/your wood cabs
these next 3 are all Taj. It can be on the golden side, or on the grayish side, so look at diff slabs. It's a beautiful quartzite that is stong, and won't etch or stain.

This is a porcelain slab that looks like marble. the golden tones would be perfect w/your wood

Or look at Cielo quartzite. (and another one called Blue Roma. both of them would look beautiful w/your wood)

I have Silestone Eternal Serena and Calacatta marble on my island.

The Silestone is the suede finish with the n-boost factory sealer. It's held up great, although I have chipped the edge twice, both times w/my iron skillet. It's my fault. However, it was eaisly repaired.

If you do chip it, save the chip piece and they can glue it back.

(the chips are right by the stovetop. you really can't even see it.

I also have two-tone cabinets.

around the left side I have a coffee bar w/marble and black/white cement tiles. horror! a patterned tile too? oh, and I have black zellige tiles inlaid into my wood flooring by the pantry.

Yeah, I broke all the rules. I'm such a rebel.
