Room of the Day: White and Teak Brighten a Dark Kitchen
A modern-rustic design brings in more light and style, while a new open floor plan increases entertaining options
AFTER: To remedy the situation, they ripped everything out and started from scratch, installing lots of white and light wood finishes for a brighter feel.
A teak-wrapped peninsula replaced the island to free up floor space and create a little division between the kitchen and a former family room, which was converted into a large dining area.

“The clients really gravitated toward the rustic-modern look,” contractor Kerry Taylor says. “White flat-panel cabinetry was planned to anchor the space from the get-go.”
The teak helps offset all the white, provides texture and establishes the modern-rustic style the homeowners were going for.

The homeowners were able to keep their former oven, range, and refrigerator which Taylor feels “look just right in the new space, even with a dramatically different feel.” For the backsplash, they chose porcelain tile.

The flat-front cabinetry maintains a modern aesthetic, while a new farmhouse-style sink nods to the rustic.

A mix of wide and slim drawers, including this spice organizer by the stove, offers efficient storage.
Rather than having a gap between the upper cabinets and the ceiling (as there was before), Taylor ran the new cabinetry all the way to the top, adding clear panels with accent mood lighting to continue the contemporary aesthetic.
The peninsula helps delineate the kitchen from the large dining room in the open plan.
In the new dining area, porcelain tile similar to the backsplash surrounds the fireplace, while more reclaimed teak backs the new bar area to tie the two spaces together.

The same white cabinetry as in the kitchen shows up here in a mix of flat-front panels and floating shelves. A wine bar and separate counter space give the big family even more room to be together and entertain in an open, inviting space.

BEFORE: Food is the focus for these homeowners and their three kids. So their previous cramped kitchen, with its cherry cabinets, dark countertops and small island, was a constant disappointment.
