Oak flooring - should I stain it?
Comments (3)We just went through this last week. We used an oil based finish on our floor and we are very happy with they way it turned out! We had planned to use a light stain on our red oak floors. After our cabinets went in the stained sample we had looked too close to our cabinet finish. We decided to use a clear finish. We are so glad we did, it is just the color we wanted. The just sanded wood is very light. The clear finish came out quite a bit darker than it looked like on our small sample piece. Think of how water changes the look of a rock--the same thing happens when you put a clear finish on dry wood....See MoreWhat Color Should I Stain My White Oak Floors?
Comments (3)I second the thought of using a stain 3 steps lighter than the island. Because you have an orange/brown wood already in the space (the island) you already have your floor colour dictated to you. Just as an aside, White Oak rarely has 'pink' in it. When it is raw it has more of a greenish tinge to it. Red Oak is more commonly associated with pink tones (and lilac...and peach and salmon). Many people find out LATER that their purchase simply says "Oak" which allows the retailer to use Red Oak...because it has 'oak' in the title. Please check your purchase receipt to ensure it says White Oak. The type of oak you have on your floor will dictate the stain colour as well as the FINISH. Remember: an oil based finish will naturally turn orange. Which will be a nice match to the orange/brown island....See MoreWhich new hardwood floor should I choose?
Comments (10)The gray stain on the doors/trim is pink (when shown against the new options). The darker floors throw more GRAY into the air = the doors look grayer than they actually are. As soon as you take away the dark gray, you will notice how pink your doors actually are. I'm sorry but the best way to get this to work is to REVERSE the colour scheme. That means dark(er) doors with LIGHTER floors....See Morewhat color flooring should I choose ?
Comments (46)OP: don't be discouraged here. there are quite a few pros and 'semi-pros' who really know their stuff. As with advice, you can take it or leave it but at least you get well rounded opinions and can go from there. what the fun if everyone agrees, at least you get something to think about with the differing opinions and it might be a better path in the long run:) that being said, i do agree with others to stay away from all gray floor. your best bet for a mostly un-dated floor is a medium brown wood tone floor. light and dark go in and out of style. glad u ordered your sparkly quartz b/c u love it and its your house!! i do like your 3rd sample, Nakan.. a nice medium brown wood tone !!...See MoreE B
