Help with new front door color

last year

Looking to paint the front doors but having trouble given the orangey terracotta color brick! Shutters are blue and siding around the garage door is gray.

I’m all over the place trying to decide between deep red (warm mahogany); dark blue similar to shutters (Glidden high salute); dark gray-blue (Glidden Garrison); lighter gray like the siding - and also oddly I thought a light sage green looked ok (Behr Breezeway). Any suggestions appreciated!!

I really don't understand the faux shutters on all those double and apron-trimmed windows. I know this is not brick, but it certainly would improve your look to eliminate them. How about a nice stained pair of doors and larger lantern lights (about 1/3 of the door's height?)

Definitely larger lantern lights. As for the shutters - all the homes in the neighborhood have them in one or another colors. Never thought to remove them.

Go with brushed nickel. Your door is kind of like a statement piece while also providing you security(the latter being the most important of course). A lot of times, people think they have to match hardware inside and out; not the case. I agree with your hubby, ORB does not add significant contrast to the look of your door but hey, it is not like people can see it from the sidewalk or street. Just want you to realize your front door knobs don't have to match your interior ones if you don't want to. Don't feel like you have spend a few hundred changing all of your interior doorknobs to match your exterior one. :D

@maifleur03 The put down was not to the taste of landords. It was to the supposed inferiority of renters. Read the post I was responding to. I know a lot of non-Americans who have visited the US suburbs and I have never heard them come home raving about the impressive good taste of American property owners. There is nothing about being a property owner that makes for better taste than being a renter, for heaven’s sake. It’s not renters who lack imagination about decorating their homes or worry so much about conforming.

I like the blue examples that @houssaon shared, but look at colors you love. Also consider if those 3 posts are necessary or not, or could they be reduced to one that is thicker? Could the lower half of the wall on the left be painted the color of your house trim to brighten up the entry area? And could those gutter spouts be repositioned better for both drainage and appearance? A fun project area and will be real nice when you're done.

The shutter treatments seem odd to me too, maybe because the windows are trimmed out to look extra long. As is, the teal shutters + white panels under the windows chop the facade up.

If you keep the shutters, try painting them white. That might work better, balancing out the existing lower panel window treatments which are already white. Then paint the front door teal blue.

I don’t care for random colors on garages - match garages to something on the house.

Shutters are too small so get new ones with slats (my suggestion for this colonial revival style home) or remove them. i like the green and teal ideas, my neighbor has a similar color brick and has a nice sage green door and shutters with white trim and grey roof. it looks very nice. And agree the lanterns need to be bigger but i think 1/3 the door size is too big. i always think that looks more appropropriate on large stately homes, not this size.

Remove the shutters they do not belong on those windows and IMO the doors are not the right style oft the house either Paint the trim and the gagae door and the new doors all the same color and I love this with brick. This style of door would be much better and a garage door in a similar style

I agree about the shutters due to the window style but also their proximity vertically, making the facade feel more squat. In contrast, see below. (Don’t care for a red door for your home and blending similar shades is suggested.)

In addition, shutters would then have to come into play when choosing front door‘s color, so removing (or painting to better tie in) would be better.

Given there is grey siding, I’d head towards a grey undertone and suggest painting the garage door the same as siding. Before painting front door, suggest removing kick plates.

For a classy look, I would go with the same colour as your shutters. And, I would update with larger more modern looking black sconces.

I would paint the 2nd story window infills the same color as the brick. If you want shutters, get wider ones and shorter ones. The long shutters and white paint is drawing attention to the infill, distracting from the overall view of the house.

Thank you all so much for the suggestion. So odd that I never questioned the shutters as out of proportion given every house in this early late 1970s neighborhood has them set this way. I’m definitely looking to get new lanterns like the ones @lisedv pictured. I found a paint color similar but lighter to Maureen’s SW Riverway suggestion. Looking at SW Meditative and Morning at Sea right now. I hesitate to go too dark as the sun hits the door much of the day. Thank you all!
