Comments (6)His Gypsy Boy (Zigeunerknabe) is the only once blooming bourbon that actually bloomed and an exotic crimson-purple for me in zone 3a - Bourbon Queen and Vari.Bolg. also once blooming bourbons but not his, gave me nothing and are gone. Other roses of his such as Grus an Teplitz, Eugene A. Merlitt, Leopold Ritter also have done well in 3a - with winter protection. Only disappointments have been his Erinnerung An Brod that died outright over winter and Northland Rose which has failed to bloom in two seasons. His Heaven's Eye I got was not it - some austin - so don't know about that one. Looking at his Orden so far this spring, I do believe I will be missing a bloom this season as I let it winter with no cane protection. Taking a chance and trying from Europe this year another 20 or so of his but on R. laxa. Basically to me all I have tried on multi-flora are king kong growers relative to similar varieties in a designated class. Some people have issues in bloom form with his roses and the color spectrum...See MoreGeschwind's roses (Hybrid Setigera)
Comments (24)I've read other people's comments here that Alchemist wasn't all that cold hardy. It has 3-4 inches of green cane this spring. If you go to Helpmefind, there's a picture of a huge copy growing on a trellis in Syracuse, New York. I still think it's the humidity and the wind that kills canes, not the temp. Until you get down to tea roses and those types. Ash Wednesday is doing much better. Alchemist is eglanteria crossed with Golden Glow, a Brownell climber with rosa wichurana parents, and Ash Wednesday is eglanteria crossed with Ballet, a hybrid tea. I'm not having any luck with wichurana around here, though I love the beautiful leaves. The roots always live. BUT, I can tell you, my attempts to study a rose's parents in order to get more cane hardiness aren't finding any significant patterns. It just seems to be trial and error. These roses are own root. Growing own root takes some patience, but generally worth the wait. It takes them 4 years to pop here, but then you have a nice thick bush with lots of canes. I know you believe in grafted roses, but you ought to try just one own root. Buy a gallon, not a band, and give it a couple years....See MoreFirst order from Rogue Valley is great!
Comments (17)Hello Michelle, Believe me, we did not intend for this to happen; we have a firm guarantee policy on misidentified roses. I am not sure why this was not more adequately followed up with you and I apologize for that! Distant Drums is notoriously hard to propagate from cuttings. The few plants that we do get to root sell out very quickly so not having a replacement plant available to send is probably the problem. In that case we should have issued you a refund. Please contact us so that we can clear this up. I would have sent you an email just now instead of posting here, but kept getting the message that I needed your password. Comments (12)Thank you Ingrid and it is always a pleasure to have a rambler that maybe a bit iffy in my climate bloom - I chose carefully where I planted it to give it the best chance. Hello Mariannese, Thank you for the article, an interesting read. I started out with quite a few Geschwind's from the 2008 import. Winter took it's toll on many - deceased - but I still have the following that appear to be doing alright - Alpenfee, Geschwind's Nordlandrose ll (Radoslavs tag name), Wenzel Geschwind (I think), Futtaker Schlingrose, Leopold Ritter, and Annachen Von Tharau (is very vigorous). And perhaps Ernst Dorrel - name tag lost issue at the moment. Unfortunately as far as I can tell in addition to Ariana, only Geschwind's Nordlandrose ll will bloom this year. I have been waiting a long time for a Nordlandrose to bloom as my Canadian version never has. And actually this version - no protection - had nearly 3/4 of it's cane length intact and healthy to start spring. However all the others enjoy the same "characteristics of surviving" a winter unprotected where -30C occurred very early - night of December 13. Leopold usually blooms - not from Europe but Canadian vendor - but it also went right to ground last winter.Gypsy Boy will not bloom but this is the 3rd try for this rose and 3rd vendor and was in a premium spot si I give up on it....See Moreportlandmysteryrose
