I only have 'Geschwind's Orden' which is a multiflora hybrid, but since no one else is chiming in here I thought I'd at least tell you about that one. Even though my climate is a lot colder than yours, I can tell you that this is a very pretty bloom and a hardy, robust rose. I have been intrigued by many other of Geschwind's roses (Himmelsauge being one of them) because I like the one I have so much. I grow mine as a very large, arching shrub and peg down the longest canes, and it looks like a fountain when it blooms. I wish I had taken a photo of the bush in bloom, but I only have a closeup.

I hope someone else contributes about other Geschwind roses for you.

I have Errinerung an Brod. All I can tell you so far is it made it through the winter. No bloom yet.
I've been collecting rosa setigera hybrids because rosa setigera is native to Michigan. Baltimore Belle, Doubloons and Captain Kidd are in pots in the house. No info yet about cane loss, scent, beauty, etc.
In your climate, hardiness isn't the problem. On a north facing wall, isn't it shady a lot? I moved Zephirine Drouhin to the north side after studying Zephy Roses pictures. She has a lot of shade.

Yes indeed, setigera hybrids are somewhat not very common, would be nice to know more about them.

HMF lists Errinerung an Brod as shade tolerant. In a site of my old reliable supplier (z5 one), they say that it likes partial shade at least, since the blooms can burn from the very bright sun. The same nursery also caries otherr Geschwind's; Leopold Ritter (multiflora), Gipsy Boy(bourbon) and Himmelsauge(setigera)as winter hardy without protection in their nursery (with temperatures as low as -28C), which is quite impressive for a rose.

Celeste, I really love the fading of your rose - and in general, it seems that many of Geschwind's fade quite pretty.

I have Baltimore Belle (at least I bought it as Baltimore Belle) and it is spectacular. It is very disease resistant, vigorous, and floriferous.

I also have Chevy Chase (which may be a setigera hybrid). This does very well here.

I don't grow the Geshwind's because I think they need to be sprayed in my area. Connie at Hartwood roses has a large collection of the Geshwinds. If she doesn't chime in, you may want to go to her hartwoodroses . com website.

Another rose that seems to fit this type of rose is Russeliana which is bulletproof for me. I love it.

Robert is right, I have a lot of Geschwind roses ... the ramblers are planted on the boundary fence at the rear of my main Rose Field. As a whole, I am not as thrilled with them as I thought I would be.

Knock on wood, but my Baltimore Belle roses have never been bothered by BS. Always clean and leafy. I am a definite fan. I am not a rose pamperer. My gardens are extensive enough, I don't have time. Prune, yes; feed, yes; coddle, no. If a rose wants to stay in my garden, they need to stand up and make a meaningful contribution to the garden. Baltimore Belle is a keeper.

I agree with Connie, too many Geschwind roses suffer terribly from blackspot. I used to collect them and have had 17 varieties over the years. I have given up collecting but I'm waiting for an Erinnerung an Brod as a replacement for Asta von Parpart. Glad to hear EaB is good. Himmelsauge is one of the best in my garden, the rugosa influence may have helped to keep it clean.

My other Geschwind setigeras are Aurelia Liffa and Corporal Johann Nagy. The first is leafless early in the season, the other has been clean. Two setigeras by Michael Horvath are rather better (so far, they are only 4 years old), Jean Lafitte and Long John Silver.

Erinnerung an Brod seems like an interesting option, although I noticed that ecological nursery I was planning to buy Geschwind's from does not carry it anymore in their list, so maybe it also was bs prone. :/

Himmelsauge was pretty clean for me too and did not require any pampering around.

Wasn't Long John Silver a bit on a high side though? It is definitely pretty and seems to be undemanding, but I doubt I can find a space for something that grows 20' up. :s

I've been wondering which ones need support. Doubloons has thick stout canes, but Captain Kidd has long thin loopy canes.

I am in mid-Sweden so I don't expect Long John Silver to outgrow its arch. It gets big in Denmark but the climate is milder there.

Most of these seem to be multiflora hybrids, not setigera. I have a Madame Hardy which always has multiflora rootstock coming up at the bottom. One spring I was getting ready to chop it off and realized the canes had made it through the winter unscathed.
Reading up about rosa multiflora, I found a website where they'd tried to kill it at zone 2, and couldn't. A science experiment followed with Bleu Magenta, but the cane loss has been bad. Same with rosa wichurana. I don't winter protect.
I believe it is the dry air that kills the canes, not the temperature. We don't have much luck with William Baffin here, either.
Rosa setigera is my next try to get a cold hardy climber, and rosa laxa.
So far, repeat bloomers win out, as the canes regrow and bloom on new wood. They're short but blooming.
It's been interesting choosing eglanteria crosses to see what I get. Ash Wednesday and Alchemist are a couple Kordes roses that are making it here. AW is outgrowing Alchemist by leaps and bounds.
That trellis I bought may have to have a clematis sometime. I was thinking of wrapping hay around the canes and trellis and tying it down with baling twine. What the canes need is moisture, and I'm not sure it would work.
What I really like are big, tall roses, like my eglanteria hedge and Hallie's Rose. They seem to suit the landscape here.
What I'm after is an avenue of the giants. I've been choosing foetida crosses too when I see them for the cane hardiness. Doubloons is one.
None of this is important to people fighting blackspot. That's one thing we don't have.

For the freezing protection some flexible cane hardy rambler might do as well, since if it is possible to lay canes on the ground and mulch them, there is more chance that canes will survive. Sometimes they protect standart roses like that in cold climates.

Also, often they use frost cloth to wrap around the plants, the important property of frost cloth is that it lets moisture through, but does not let it out, hence it prevents drying to some degree. Hay and frost cloth on top of it might be a good idea actually, or at least worth trying.

I did not know there was such a thing as frost cloth, which is weird, considering where I live. I may have to try it.
All of the canes next to the ground make it fine, which makes me think it's the moisture, not the temperature.
I was out checking the damage today and saw a weird phenomenon that I've never noticed. Almost every rose had a bright green cane pointing toward the rising sun amidst last year's wreckage.
Errinerung has some green canes and Alchemist looks better than Bleu Magenta. Ash Wednesday looks pretty good.
The most toasted ones were Gruss an Teplitz and Alfred Colomb.

I think you encounter frost cloth more if you grow vegetables, nowadays it is often used instead of polietilen sheets to pre-warm the soil and protect seedlings. It is really good stuff.

Very interesting, elemire. First of all, it looks like a ghost town. :)) Do you know why they didn't cover some roses completely to the top? I don't have a cold climate, but if I were really industrious and a late hard freeze was on the way with teas already budding out, I think I would try this.

I think they have a nursery in an old farm in the middle of nowhere, that's why a ghostown. :) They do not cover other roses completely, since they specialize in the roses that can be grown in z4-5 climate without winter protection, so those uncovered are either trials, either hardy enough and do not need protection. Also they usually prune down very long canes of the climbers in the autumn and protect main part of the canes only.

From Geschwinds they say that Leopold Ritter, Himmelsauge, Gipsy Boy and Erinnerung an Brod are not covered for the winter at all (that's as low as -22F more or less). Same for the Albas they sell, they do not cover them at all and say that they do not suffer from winter damage unless temperatures drop bellow -22 F.

Elemire, I see from your "My Page" you're from the Netherlands. That must be cool to be in the flower capital of the world.
I checked out that frost cloth and the only deterrent is the price-Ten bucks a sheet. I'm going to try it though.
I get cane loss on everything here, albas, you name it. We get down to 40 below here but it's gotten lots milder, like everywhere else. Haven't seen temps that low in a long time.
What we don't have is humidity. That's why I think it's the moisture, not the temperature. I grow mostly own root roses.
My albas, centifolias, gallicas have enough cane survival, but types like Dr. Van Fleet are groundcover roses here. The roots survive and the canes under the snowline.

It is indeed quite nice over here, I moved here 6 years ago and still keep getting amazed by all the tiny Dutch gardens. :D It is really pretty, though quite different what stereotypical images show (not too many tulip fields, but every step is tidy and cultivated). :)

As for frost damage, indeed humidity helps, but 40 bellow is quite bellow for a rose. If you usually get decent snowline in the winter, you might want to elevate it a bit, what can be done by mulching, but also by throwing a mound of spruce branches (or any other kind of branches for that matter) on the shrubs. But yeah, growing stuff with that low winter temperatures is a challenge. :)

One I have that has not been mentioned is Nymphe Egeria, hybrid Multiflora, beautiful rose. Healthy in my garden. I have pics on HMF.
This past winter was hardy to the tips. Reblooms.
The only Setigera I have is Captain Kidd, but it's having a hard time getting adjusted.

I hope you have stayed with this thread. I have a question on Aschermittwoch.I love the flower but sadly my plant seems to have died. Still a bit early here so maybe a new cane might still emerge. I also have Alchymist, Baltimore Belle and Long John. Anyway I was very surprised about your comment that Aschermittwoch was outgrowing Alychymist! I have to check the pH in the spot as other places in my gardenit is low.

I've read other people's comments here that Alchemist wasn't all that cold hardy. It has 3-4 inches of green cane this spring. If you go to Helpmefind, there's a picture of a huge copy growing on a trellis in Syracuse, New York.
I still think it's the humidity and the wind that kills canes, not the temp.
Until you get down to tea roses and those types.
Ash Wednesday is doing much better. Alchemist is eglanteria crossed with Golden Glow, a Brownell climber with rosa wichurana parents, and Ash Wednesday is eglanteria crossed with Ballet, a hybrid tea.
I'm not having any luck with wichurana around here, though I love the beautiful leaves. The roots always live.
BUT, I can tell you, my attempts to study a rose's parents in order to get more cane hardiness aren't finding any significant patterns. It just seems to be trial and error.
These roses are own root. Growing own root takes some patience, but generally worth the wait. It takes them 4 years to pop here, but then you have a nice thick bush with lots of canes.
I know you believe in grafted roses, but you ought to try just one own root. Buy a gallon, not a band, and give it a couple years.

Thanks for the response. True I usually go grafted although I have a couple of own roots. Actually several have come from Vintage that have not lived through the first year. Probably my fault as I often neglected them. But it's an idea that I'll try.
