Bathroom towel storage: train rack, baskets, inside closet or ?
Comments (10)floating shelves are good for towel storage - can be painted the same as wall color to blend and not feel so bulky A train/hotel type holder is good inside the shower too if wall space is tight....like where they hang in hotels..high and at the back shower wall. You would definately want a higher end all-stainless one if hung there. A more involved fix idea- in two homes we've owned I've "stolen" space for storage by adding wall cabinets that bumped into an adjacent room's closet...such as I took a foot and a half from the back of a hall closet that backed up to a bathroom and used this as an inset wall flush towel cabinet. The coolest space stealer we made was when a bedroom closet backed up to a back shower/tub combo. wall; we built a 14 inch deep niche at the back of the shower (and tiled it in) for towel storage...this was handy storage and worked very well, this was in the mid-90's before the digital age and all this sharing of ideas...I can't find any photos of that. :( Also, even stealing a few inches from any wall and placing shelves that are recessed in and extend out with an 8 inch ledge or so gives you enough for towel storage with less bump-out into a small room. Wonder if I'm clear in comunicating my ideas, but hth....See MoreAnyone want to share their bathroom budgets?
Comments (43)Our DIY remodel on a 7x9 bathroom ran about $5000, a month of work with a few weeks prep beforehand and a month finishing afterwards (handles, baseboards, minor details). We closed off a doorway, replaced vanity and floor, re-enameled the tub and replaced the tub surround, kept the toilet. All in keeping with our compromise between too many ideas, and avoiding being the fanciest house on our fairly basic street. - $250 materials + 7 days to close off a door, reframe that wall, and drywall; also fix and skimcoat the manky old ceiling. - $550 lighting: $200 vent fan/light, $40 can light, $200 vanity lights, $75 or so on various outlets, switches, a timer switch for the fan, electrical boxes etc. - $500 flooring: adhesive, grout, and tile, Armstrong Alterna (powdered stone in a vinyl matrix, I love it!) - $1300-1400 Miracle Method: ~$500 for tub re-enamel, ~$800 for fiberglass tub surround fit/install. - $1800 for vanity setup: $950 60" vanity (RTA bamboo from Domain Cabinets Direct), $450 Swanstone top from Lowe's, $100 Delta faucet (internet order), $250 Kohler medicine cabinet, $50 handles - $350 finishing touches: $175 hardware (towel/shower bar), $100 soft goods (shower curtain, rug, towels), $75 paint and art. Add to that, another $500 in contractor fees for my father-in-law: several bottles of wine, and dinner at a good restaurant!...See MoreMaximizing bathroom storage/vanity style - thoughts? Pics
Comments (10)Talley sue - of course you have a heat pipe, you're in NYC! LOL! Mine was rusted, peeling and thoroughly disgusting when I first moved in, so when I decided to paint the bathroom, I scraped all that nasty paint (and God knows what else) off with steel wool and then spray painted the pipe with heatproof paint. It has held up reasonably well, as you can see - this was 5 years ago. However, I hate the way it looks and I hate the fact that I occasionally bump against it when getting out of the shower (I've burned my unmentionables more than once, ouch!), so it needs to be covered. It's the only source of heat for the bathroom but our building is so overheated that I doubt it will bother me to have it covered/insulated. However, I don't know what my contractor has in mind - possibly just a sheet metal sleeve - that's one of the things we need to discuss. I love the idea of building a cabinet around it, but I'm not sure what I could store that close to a heat source. As for the vanity, I am considering white - I just wasn't sure how white would look against all that white tile. I haven't decided what color to paint the walls yet because I haven't decided on the mosaic accent, but it will likely have just about any blue or green imaginable in it so painting the vanity to match/coordinate should be a snap. There's just something I love about dark wood, though, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it if I didn't think it looked funny with the floor. I haven't ordered the floor tile, so I'm not married to the wood-look porcelain, but I also haven't seen any other floor tiles that really grab me. If you have any better suggestions for floor tiles that would coordinate with white subways, let me know!...See MoreI'm trying to choose a bathroom vanity
Comments (34)I used the RH Lugarno Sconces and coordinating towel bar and robe hook in my upstairs guest bath (full renovation). I also used a RH medicine cabinet, but can't remember the name. I'm happy with the quality. I've been using the bath for five months while my master addition was being built. I bought a RH Odeon Vanity on sale, including the marble top and the sink, for my master bath. The difference in quality, compared to my custom kitchen cabinets is the operation of the drawers. The drawers in RH vanities don't have the Blum glides/soft-close like my kitchen drawers. I also bought RH Wilshire sconces, a "train" towel rack, a towel bar, a shower shelf--all in polished nickel. Very happy with the quality. I bought during sales that also included a 20% friends and family....See More
