since you have that backsplash curb, it's a bit of a process to remove it. You'll need a professional.

But, I would make an effort... not attractive to add tile above it.

The granite you have chosen doesn't really compliment the oak cabinets.

I would focus on the lighting... you need a lot of light to counter those color combinations.

Your cabinets do not look like oak. Cherry maybe. The granite is existing…correct?

i think a tile backsplash would be nice. find someone to remove the 4” piece first. simple off white subway tile. nothing busy.

Add under cabinet lighting. Remove the 4” splash, and install the Daltile Color Wheel 3x6 subway in K775 Matte Biscuit.

I think your granite is more than fine. a backsplash will update it. post a bigger picture of a door and someone here can tell you what species it is. my granite last house with tile backsplash…daltile in bisquit, if i remember right, as a matter of fact.

the cabs are not oak. I can tell by looking at the wood. show me a better pic of the cabs

Here's why you don't want to leave the 4" piece. same granite as yours.

(you could do a darker color if you like. a charcoal color tile would actually look very nice w/your granite and the wood)

for example, any ONE of these colors (not a mixture of all five!) would work w/your granite)

give me a better pic showing countertop with the upper cabs in the pic.

I can give you tile possiblities if you'd like. here's a quick one.

Bedrosians Zenis 2x6 in Solar:

removing the 4" backsplash is easy, score, gently pry. lots of how to videos

when you tile, you'll get this look next to the granite top.

BTW, this is a natural cherry cab w/a similar granite as yours. pretty w/warmer white tile, new hardware, and think about adding some glass to a few of your uppers.

since you have taller upper doors, I'd pick a nice pull and not a knob.

something like this would be perfect. you can do any finish you like.

these gold handles would look very pretty w/the Bedrosains tile I posted above.

same granite, 3x6 tile. (I prefer a longer tile like a 2x8, 2x10, or a 3x9)

Botticino tumbled marble, very common tile w/this granite.

take the one off the side if you can. if you dont' remove it, you'll get this look:

someone mentioned lighting. this is why you don't want warm lights. makes everything look to gold/yellow. go 3500-4000K

some neutral paint colors that work w/your granite

i totally agree and want to remove the granite lip, but am worried about damage especially in the areas where the granite is glued to cabinets (why would they do that!)

I love the bedrosian tile suggestion too! need to look into the lights as i am not familiar with the different options. in terms of pulls i love your suggestions!

and yes, removing it from the cabinet is going to look like this (my bathroom cab when I removed the 4" piece from it)

But, a good wood finisher would be able to remove the adhesive from yours, and match the stain color. (Mine is alder, next to my desk area, so I've left it like that! lol)

If worse comes to worse, you could just swing your tile around to the side and cover it w/the same backsplash tile.

this is a soft white tile in a herringbone. if you did this w/matching grout, it would look nice w/your wood. you want a 2x10, 2.5X10 or smaller for this

i like the Bedrosians Zenis 2x6 in Solar: as posted above by Beth but lots of great suggestions.

Those look exactly like cherry cabinets I had in my last house. I like the interesting creamy white tiles that Beth posted. Your best idea is to get samples (put masking tape on the back of each with their name and where you got it from) and keep lining them up. You will need to buy more than one of the “winners” eventually to really see how it will loo, but for now try everywhere. Tile Bar sends 5 for $5, but you can also go to Lowe’s and Floor and Decor.
Don’t ignore the idea of a dark tile that pulls a color from your granite. I think the whites will look great but dark tiles can be dramatic and different.
Your kitchen will be refreshed with a new backsplash and new hardware. I love the idea of black or dark bronze handles on those beautiful wood doors.
Once you remove the 4” piece, break a small piece off and keep it in your car while you shop the local stores.
