Hair straightening at the salon
Comments (4)I have hair with a teeny bit of natural wave that that frizzes easily. Unfortunately, none of these attributes can be cut or styled to look nice---just a halo of frizz with hair going every which way. Long, long ago I used at home straightening which was like a permanent process and it never really made any difference. I've had Japanese Hair straightening (Bio-Ionic products) in a salon 3 times at $300-400. However, it amounted to once a year, not every other month. I still have to blow dry to straighten but the first two times I had it done, it seemed to "humidity proof" my hair. It was so nice to be able to wear it down and straight instead of in a pony tail all summer! However, the third time I had it done (same stylist & product) she goofed it up and ruined my hair. It feels like it was permed as soon as it gets wet and turns into a tangled mass that is difficult to comb even with a wide tooth comb and conditioner. It has no "body" and did nothing to "humidity proof" my hair either. When I complained to the stylist, she blew me off. I went to the salon management and they made her redo the top and sides of my hair where it was the worst. It didn't make much difference. I think it is just ruined and will have to grow out. Does anyone know of a salon Japanese straightening product that gets good results on very frizzy hair? I would like to try another salon that uses a different product....See MoreFinally - got hair done today
Comments (11)I have naturally curly hair - almost 63. When I was 5, with curls like Shirley Temple, my cousin with the thin straight hair decided she needed a perm but would only go for a Toni if I went too (her family had money, mine did not - guess who "won"). No hairdresser should have permed my hair - talk about a brillo pad! I have hated going to the hairdresser ever since. I am also hair dryer challenged and diffuser challenged. So I stick my head under the tap to wash it and then add some curl enhancer and that is it. Yet when I go for my colour and cut (yesterday) I always have it blowed straight - by someone who knows how to use a brush and dryer - not just swing a dryer around and then use a flat iron - that will kill your hair. While my hair has always been dry - and very thick - it does look very good when done by a hairdresser - I have to be very careful since my hair can be styled in many ways - 95% of which do not suit me. People always ask me why I curl my hair when it looks better straight! As if....Actually, even if I could use a dryer properly, it would take forever for me to dry my hair. I remember being told that post menopause my hair would start to thin out - well it hasn't. I agree re the smell of perms - I would know immediately if someone even came near me. Now if only I suited any other colour than auburn I would be happy. Red is the devil to maintain - good thing I always wear a hat. It is funny, we always want the hair we don't have. Great that you are happy with your perm - but it is funny that my hair looks just like yours after my tap routine....See MoreHair today...gone tomorrow
Comments (11)Audrey, my sis did that last month and I was cheering, she really was due. She had retired, and her replacement didn't work out, her boss called begging her to come back to work for 6 months to straighten out the books. Overwhelmed with projects she'd started at home and commuting, working full time again, she just let her hair go rather than spend her day off keeping a salon appointment. Then, she decided she may as well keep growing a while longer, do the Locks of Love....she has 99% gray very thick hair. It was pretty awful - in a pony tail, or banana clip, silver at the roots while a little yellowish at the ends and some indescribable color in between. It aged her terribly. Cute short bob now. She made her donation and of course that was generous. She's never been one to fuss much with hair or makeup and the bob easy for her. I hope you enjoy yours for summer and soon love it ;)...See MoreAnother tipping question.....hair salon
Comments (36)I've no idea whether has to do with tipping, just my subjective spontaneous thoughts I was cleaning houses too in my youth(interesting how all these random jobs enrich one's experience), I know what a hard labor it is, and I forgive my cleaning lady driving me nuts with coming whenever she pleases, etc, because she's a nice person and a good cleaning lady and we grew attached. And of course I give her/her helpers Christmas gift and Easter gift yet a great stylist-it's a level or artistry there. it's rarer. I embarrassed myself once by kissing a hand of my previous hair stylist in NYC(the one who recommended the current salon)...I don't know what I was thinking, I was just so happy and grateful to him I took his hand and kissed it. He looked very touched but very overwhelmed. The public was slightly puzzled)) I like my cleaning lady but I'm not kissing her hand when overcame by emotion)) Her hands have less of this magic power of transformation. I had several great stylists in my life-I lost them only when either they moved or I moved away, and life taught me to ask for their reference on the next stylist wherever I go, in within their powers of course to give me that info. In NYC I had to take a train and then subway to get to my stylist Here, it's an hour drive without traffic and minimum two hours with. It's very tiresome to even to go there, to that salon of theirs. Yet I go(much rarer than I should, because far away, and to save money), and I tip, and as you already know- I sometimes do silly things like kissing a stylist's hand in public)) It's not like I'm crazy to tip, of course, it's a lot of money. And they're much more affluent folks, these salon owners, than I could ever be. Like, they don't need this tip to survive. At all. Not on this top of the mountain they were able to get to. But they're special kind of artists. That's how it is. Great stylist-whole different level. It's a very hard and often ungrateful job that takes years and passion to master and there's huge talent involved, in their case, a talent I was lucky to meet and am not about to loose until it depends on me It's customarily to tip here-okay then I'll tip It's not customarily to kiss one's hand)) especially-not for a woman to kiss a man's hand. In public. lol. I'm just chanelling my appreciation in a culture-appropriate way)))...See Morededtired
