Hair straightening at the salon

I'm asian, but yet I have a few waves in my hair, which often times drives me nuts. I have thick hair (and lots of it) and am too impatient to use one of those hair straighteners on my hair every morning (I was my hair nightly.). Have any of you ever had your hair straightened professionally? (I've done it with the perming solution at home and totally damaged my hair.) I know that there are two types. I called my salon and they have the old method for approx. $75.00 and the new one for approx. $300.00. Has anyone ever tried both? What's the difference? I am thinking about doing the $75.00 one. I can't afford the other one.

The $300 one must be the "Japanese" method. A friend had it done (paid $600). You still need to blow your hair straight after washing but it takes less time and lasts longer. Any new growth needs to be done every other month or so.

What's the $75 "old" method? Perming solution on large rollers?

Yes, I believe the costly method is the "japanese" method and the old style is where they use the perming solution. I didn't know they did it on large rollers. Interesting... Well I'm still interested in seeing what others have to comment about these procedures. Especially the "old school" style being that I can't afford the $300 way with the added costs of coloring and haircuts on top of that. Yikes!

I went in for my 'consult'. My hair is just a bit below my shoulder and quite thick. Price: $425. Ouch. Here's what I was told; no washing for 3 days, no pulling hair back, no tucking behind ears, no sunglasses flipped up on head (that one is really tough for me!) and then use special shampoo with no, um - something sulfate? I can't remember but they said it's readily available and no need to buy their brand, and be sure to color my hair BEFORE the procedure because it actually helps to seal in the color. I forgot to ask what coloring after the fact is like because I color every 4 weeks. During those 3 days, any curve, curl or kink in my hair from sleeping or whatever needs to be ironed out. Regarding what I could expect; will last 3 - 4 months, does not grow out in the way that chemical or Japanese straightening does but more or less 'wears off', will make my hair very shiney and healthy. What it will NOT do is make my hair totally stick straight but it will eliminate frizz. It also will not mean that I am blow dryer or flat iron free but that could be based on hair type. She told me I will be able to wash, comb, then pul my hair back in a pony and it will remain smooth, something I've never been able to do. But if I want some semblance of a 'style' it will require blowing it out as I do now but will require far less work to get it smooth. I'd love to try it but the price is stopping me. If it was $300 and I had it done at the beginning of the summer I could maybe justify it. I'm sure there are other places here that do it (I'm in the Chicago suburbs) but this is the only one I know of. And this isn't a technique I want done by a newbie - this gal has been at it 8 months and has done hundreds of heads.

This is a really old thread, but why not build on what you've got? So we have an endorsement for the Perfect Straight system. The hairdessers around me in Michigan seem to all use Bio-Ionic. Does anybody know whether that system gives wet to straight and shiny with zero frizz? I have wavy hair, fine textured hair which folds and bends easily. I often wake up with it bent out of shape. Do you wake up straight and shiny? Has your hair stayed very flat and close to your head with little lift or bounce? Do you have to blow dry? I've seen some after pictures where there appears to be tiny little kinks in the hair, and not a lot of shine. Anybody had that result? Thanks for any info you have.

Jerzeegirl: I have a less expensive one (Conair from Sally's, don't remember exactly - maybe $40?) that I got to try it out. I figured I'd see how much I used it, if I could use it properly, and then, if I wanted something better or if it died quickly, upgrade. I know nothing about titanium; but when I bought mine, the stylist strongly recommended ceramic Sweeby: I just had my hair whacked from mid-back to chin-length. I had stick-straight hair before babies, but those pregnancy hormones gave me some tiny waviness at the ends. My stylist talked me into trying Curl Conscious Creme from Belle du Jour. I got it at the salon, which is Aveda-affiliated. This was just last Saturday - so I'm still experimenting - but I do see more waviness and crazyness. It's not a heavy creme, btw. Feels more like a light conditioner. Hth - Cate (can you tell I'm procrastinating today? Posts everywhere!)

It not issue of what it contacts. it's the fumes and the off gassing. Just like a perm will smell for awhile. As long as it lasts on your hair your are breathing the stuff whether you can smell it or not.

I have hair with a teeny bit of natural wave that that frizzes easily. Unfortunately, none of these attributes can be cut or styled to look nice---just a halo of frizz with hair going every which way.

Long, long ago I used at home straightening which was like a permanent process and it never really made any difference. I've had Japanese Hair straightening (Bio-Ionic products) in a salon 3 times at $300-400. However, it amounted to once a year, not every other month. I still have to blow dry to straighten but the first two times I had it done, it seemed to "humidity proof" my hair. It was so nice to be able to wear it down and straight instead of in a pony tail all summer!

However, the third time I had it done (same stylist & product) she goofed it up and ruined my hair. It feels like it was permed as soon as it gets wet and turns into a tangled mass that is difficult to comb even with a wide tooth comb and conditioner. It has no "body" and did nothing to "humidity proof" my hair either. When I complained to the stylist, she blew me off. I went to the salon management and they made her redo the top and sides of my hair where it was the worst. It didn't make much difference. I think it is just ruined and will have to grow out.

Does anyone know of a salon Japanese straightening product that gets good results on very frizzy hair? I would like to try another salon that uses a different product.
