If some portion of the audio signal passed over the internet - a VOIP connection at the company, a VOIP or cell phone signal on the receiving end, it's my understanding that such signals are different from analog audio and are not meant to operate in a constant, continuous manner similar to streaming video, as an example. They can have a staccato or other distorted effect.

I've experienced that before too, I'm not sure if it's within the control of the other end of the line.

Thank you, @Elmer J Fudd, for that explanation. I've been wondering why the sound deteriorated so badly on long hold calls. Now, I understand.

I just turn on speaker phone and let it sit on the desk until a human speaks. Need to distance myself from that racket.

My vet and my insurance company have the same music, a Mozart piano piece. I got a little confused recently as to whom I was on hold with. At least it’s of fairly good quality, but not perfect. And now I understand why. Thanks, Elmer.

I do the same as Elizabeth. Giving your ear some distance from the sound somehow makes it more tolerable, at least for me.

Y'all can send me a cupcake if you wish, chocolate preferred. My comment passes along something a software engineer I know told me not too long ago. He may or may not have known what he was talking about but it seemed to be a plausible view from someone more likely than I am to know something about it.

I use a landline most of the time, and it has a volume control. I assume our high-tech cell phones do too. Very handy. My favorite accessory for either one is a headset. Being on hold is much more tolerable when I can move around and do whatever I like.

I spoke to someone recently and their voice was distorted. I commented on the poor connection and that I'd hang up and call again right away.

She said they use VOIP and that the phone distorts when they stream movies, games, etc at the same time. I've noticed it a few times when calling.
