I'm in a dilemma....I didn't wear earrings for about two years fairly recently. Of course, the littles holes closed much to my sadness.

Where does one go these days to have ears pierced? I was 16 when they were first done in a jewelry store. Here I am, nearly 65, and wanting to have my ears pierced again!

Does anyone have a lead on non-pierced earrings that look cute? Jasdip and I both need some help.

I retired and quit wearing earrings over 5 years ago. One ear needs to be re pierced as it has closed. If you live near a mall, usually there is a teen type jewelry store and that is where I have had it done for me and for my daughter. I need to get the one ear fixed one of these days.

Just an FYI, jasdip, I always have to have the posts shortened on my earrings. They used to kill me sleeping or talking on the phone, until I realized that I could have them shortened.

My piercings close quickly too. I had totally quit wearing earrings because I am allergic to most metals and I didn't have any comfortable to sleep in. Even when the holes were open I still had a problem getting them in because I very fleshy lobes not flat skinny ones. So I determined that I needed to stretch the holes a little bit and that might solve the problem. So I bought a few pairs of the gauge earrings that are progressively thicker. Like the people use that have the giant holes in their ear lobes. I Was NOT going for that look! Lol. But it worked wonderfully! I would wear them constantly even sleeping and the ones I got were very comfortable, they are surgical stainless steel or titanium I have both. Those are metals the body will usually accept and I have never had the slightest reactions. A normal earring wire is a 16 gauge I went from that to 14, then 12, then 10. I am staying there between the 10 and 12. I can now slip in any earrings with out even looking at the mirror and I have not had any problems with them closing but I do keep something in now. I don't have a visible hole, in other words if I removed the earrings I don't have a gapping hole. I keep them very clean, alcohol on my ears and the jewelry and every week I massage some coco butter Vaseline all over my earlobes and I will put some on the earrings before I insert them so it gets in the holes. I think it would take quite a while to close up now. I wear my gauge earrings daily but I have lots of nice dressy earrings in the regular size wire.

I bought my various sizes of rings at the mall from a kiosk but I also have bought from eBay and etsy. The ones I started with are shaped like a circle with the bottom part of the circle missing and at the end there are rhinestone balls they screw off and on so you can slip the ring in the ear. I had all colors of the screw on balls so I could match my clothes. I always got compliments on them. I will find a picture.

It doesn't take long to stretch them just a small amount.

I always thought clip ons were painfull..I have my ears pierced and wear small gold hoops that I can sleep in and leave in most of the time.

I gave up on wearing pierced earrings. I was always having to remove them for various xrays and could never get them back in without help. I don't wear earrings much anymore but when I do, I wear clip-ons. I bought some clip-on bases at the craft store and made my own earrings.

I am over 70 and never did get my ears pierced, wear clip ons, got several pairs that work, macy's has clips as well as kmart, works for me.

I've been told that the mall is the worst place to get ears pierced. The gun is quite painful (true). The best place is a tattoo parlor! The needles are very thin and they do body piercing so they know what they're doing.......unlike a retail clerk in a mall.

I'm not sure I have the guts to go into a tats parlor. LOL

I think I can get my earring in again with some help.

I find that I'm allergic to more and more earrings.......the nickel in them I assume. It's not very long before my ears start burning and hurt.

The thin wire is nice that curve through the hole and hang down the back of the ear. But they're often long enough that they tickle me, and I'm always scratching behind my ear. :-)

My ears ache at even the thought of wearing clip ons!

I do have fairly small holes so any time I have to put in some fatter posts, I always dip the post in some neosporin ointment first. It makes the posts slide in easily and it protects the ear from infection.

As far as sleeping in earrings, I typically don't and don't need to anymore. But if you do want to to keep the holes open, look to wearing small hoops where the wire goes inside the hoop at night...they don't poke like posts do.

I would go back to Walmart and get them re-pierced. Had my first piercing at 15 at an earring kiosk in the mall. Had second piercing done with my daughter when she was 11. We did it together in memory of my mom dying.

I seldom wear earrings, but I love them! I'm pretty sure my second piercings are closed by now.

fushionbeads.com has a different kind of earring like my sister who doesn't have pierced ears wears. She calls the other clip-ons ear killers. She buys hers at thrift stores and rummage sales and sometimes in a regular store.

Jasdip, I have the same issue with irritation from the nickel content. I had success covering the metal post and contact areas with clear nail polish. A few thin coats work for me.

I would absolutely go to a professional piercer. That is their entire job and while you might be squimish about going in one, I think you'll find that a nice reputable parlor will be very clean and have an almost medical office feel to it.

I won't take my girls to a kiosk or store where someone received 5 minutes of training to use a gun which crushes the tissue as the earring goes in.

This is grossing me out. When I was 30, my mother in law took me to a jewelry store and had my ears pierced and bought me a few pair for my birthday. My kids still remember me screaming as I tried to change pairs. Then the left one got infected, and I thought the heck with this. My hair always covers my ears, I could never sleep with them in, so I let them close and never ever thought of piercings again. I shiver when I see people with piercings all over their body.

Go to a dermatologist to have your ears pierced or re-pierced. It is piercing your skin and you want someone well trained in infection control!

Instead of earrings, you might try ear cuffs or ear wraps.

Ear cuffs rely on a small curved band of metal that "clips on" to the side cartilage of the ear. Though many commercial ear cuffs are designed to fit a part of the ear called the "upper helix," most Marty Magic ear cuffs are designed specifically to fit halfway down, around the "helix" and the "antihelix", where the cartilage is usually the firmest.

Ear wraps attach by wire that curves behind the ear, similar to a Blue Tooth or a pair of glasses. The wearer's ear slips comfortably between the space between the wire and the decorative ear wrap design on the front of the ear.

My ear piercings have closed over and I cannot get earrings through. Therefore, I started purchasing and wearing clip-on earrings. I have to say I like the sizes of the clip-ons much better. Their sized are much more flattering to me than the small pierced earrings. Will never have ears re-pierced.

To prevent holes from closing, I wear a pair of stud earrings 24/7. The studs are just simple 18K gold ball earrings with screw in post at the back. Since the back is screwed in, the post isn't very long. The ball earrings are comfortable and don't get my hair tangled in.

Jasdip - the holes in my ear lobes are small. In recent years I only wear earrings about 2 to 3 times a week. I do not wear heavy jewellery - and I have found that by just wearing them for a few hours during the day that the holes have stayed open enough to allow me to put on the earrings. I do not sleep with them in. Sometimes it is a bit harder than others to insert them, but so far I have not seen any blood. I do use a cotton swab with alcohol on my ear lobes occasionally.

I was almost 30 when I had my ears pierced - I was scared to death! I had the piercings done at a mall with a gun and studs were inserted. I do have an issue with many metals, hence the reason why I do not leave them in. I can't wear silver period.

I find that clip-ons hurt too much. The inserts on my earrings are very fine.

As an alternate: next time, you can try to put the earring in backwards, that is, push it in from the backside towards the front to reopen the hole. For some reason, the front of the hole will often be fine, but the back give a bit of resistance, so going back to front, overcomes this. Weird but true! I've done this several times for my second set of upper holes until I quit wearing earrings in them.

My SIL pierced my ears with a needle over 40 years ago. I love earrings and have a lot of them. Have never worn earrings to bed. After reading this thread, I realized that now that I am retired, I need to wear my earrings more so that the holes don't close. I like the long wires better than the posts, but have all kinds. My hair is cut short, so I prefer the earrings that dangle a bit below my ear, but not the big heavy kind.
