Review of Hybrid Tea Dark Desire
Comments (79)I live in British Columbia and there can be wet, cold weather in spring. My Dark Desire is now 8 years old. It never, ever gets black spot and it is not overly thorny (the worst possible thorns are on Falling in Love.) These aspects are apparently very variable according to location. It would grow too tall and become leggy but I cut it down every sprng. I have to because the cold winter always causes some die off, but each spring it renews itself again. Comments (22)Hi Sharon, Sorry I do not know the fertilizer rates in the Miracle Grow soil so I do not know how to respond to how much or if you can fertilize more. I think it is a slow release formula and perhaps not too strong a dose but you would have to read the packaging. Just not a product I ever use. A foliar feed would help them, but getting rid of the mites will certainly change the way the plants grow. Here in the west spider mites are a huge issue. It is because of the hot dry weather which favors the growth. They actually are not on the roses early in the season but when the grass pastures dry down around our farm they flock to the roses. It is not because of pesticide use - we do not use it. Just the right conditions and the population explodes. What does happen in greenhouses is that using the same pesticides over and over causes a population of insecticide resistant mites. What we do is overhead water the roses - this does not get rid of all of them but it keeps the population in check at a rate we can live with. Wherever we do not overhead water I have spider mites - tons of them. They particularly like the small leaved ground covers. You know given how small those plants are you could just take them put some plastic on the soil and turn them over into a bucket of water for five minutes and repeat this twice a day for a week. This will be a lot less expensive than buying a devise you will only use infrequently. You will also need to scape the web and eggs off the leaf underside to prevent more from hatching. Comments (7)I ordered both Dark Desire and Pink Enchantmentplus a bunch of other Kordes own root roses last year from mostly Chamblees and RU. Both came through our pretty cold Massachusetts winter with very little cane damage as did the other roses. The only one that suffered cane damage was Golden Gate climbing rose. Most weren't even planted last year the pots they came in were just sunk in the ground in late fall. They are all now growing great though still in pots, but they will be planted soon :-) Pink Enchantment, Dark Desire and the rest exhibited great disease resistance. I'm slowly revamping my rose beds to mostly Kordes roses with some Easy Elegance in the mix since they are winter hardy in my Z5b garden, require little pampering, have to "die-for" flowers and are resistant to black spot. My favorites so far are First Crush and Poseidon since Dark Desire didn't b;loom last year. They'll soon be replacing all of my fussy DA's as the true queens in my garden. Comments (31)I am really looking forward to my dark desire and my Twilight Zone both new as of last fall. So, hoping for great things this year. My Dark Desire is putting on some height and Twilight Zone is looking pretty good too. So finally, what we have all been planning for and dreaming about is begining to happen . Spring is in the air. Birds are singing, days are longer and finally, buds and perhaps some blooms . I need to enjoy my gardens and not let it overwhelm me and take joy in the beauty and not look at the weeds because they will always be there but my blooms are fleeting. 2 years agoI think it pairs exceptionally well with other dark reds, whites, and creams.
I have mine between Oklahoma and Mr Lincoln with white drift at the base and a Pascali nearby.I just planted Gypsy Soul nearby and it has a similar iridescent cool red coloring.
