I'm suggesting removing the brick and replacing it with stone with something like blue star creeper planted between them. One, you don't know what's under the brick, so if you wanted to plant, you'd need to dig it out, amend, raise it up as much as 12". Two, if you replace the brick with shrubs, it can be a little colorless and need regular pruning to keep it neat. I don't like wild shrubs at an entryway. You do need shrubs under your window and could use something large to anchor the corner. Someone in your area might suggest some attractive, well-behaved shrubs--I like box honeysuckles for shade but IDK if they grow in your area. Three, annuals alone wouldn't work because you'll have bare soil October until June or July--annuals need heat to take off here, especially in the shade. So that's my thinking--a pretty stone mini patio with some greenery between the stones, with pots for color that can be seen from the road. Another thing you could do is just take out some of the bricks along the edges and corners, and maybe a few in between, and plant groundcovers in the holes. Then proceed with pots....See MoreFloor Plan-before and after, also kitchen island/spacing reassurance?
Comments (19)I agree that the half-bath makes a pinch-point in the foyer. Besides, every time you come down the stairs you are looking at a bathroom lol! Can you move it to the nook at the front of the house, between garage and foyer? Then the door to the garage can move a little further back, which is good. As it currently is, you enter the garage right into the side of a car. That's a traffic jam right there. Also, the kitchen-dining room view. If you are at the dining room table, especially at the front of the house, and look towards the hostess, you have a straight view of the range. I think that you a planning on a sideboard or something on the walk behind the stairs, but if you move the door over there, it's harder to see into the kitchen; what you do see is further away; and from more areas of the kitchen you will be able to see the dining room and out the gorgeous bay window. Kind of like this: oops, I notice that moving the powder room puts it in full view of the breakfast nook. So in the second picture I moved the door to the right, so at least it opens to the sink, not the commode. And, if you put the bench/drop zone across from the stairs, that will block the view, too....See MoreComplete IKEA Kitchen Renovation Before & After
Comments (54)@sushipup1 - yep! do you have an email address? I'll send you his contact info. I don't think he's on houzz, otherwise I'd just link his profile. @The Patchman Roofing Company- Thank you so much! @Oliviag- Thank you! Honestly, for the amount of time it took, I have absolutely no complaints. From demo to done, I think all in we were about four weeks and change, including waiting for countertop fabrication. It's hard remembering there was ever a different kitchen, honestly. It's so perfect for our aesthetic and our house - it was absolutely worth it!...See MoreBefore and After of my brother's condo
Comments (29)No worries, the wall is not a load-bearing one. They were originally going to re-do the cabinets in the kitchen, then really wanted to open everything up. They hired the work to be done, but picked all of the flooring, tile, fixtures, appliances etc. He decided how he wanted things laid (diagonal floor, etc). He's very secure in his tastes and knows what he wants and likes. He has exquisite taste, and liked the darkness of before, it was calming and relaxing. But it was also dark in the winter months. He also prefers mood lighting and g/f wanted brighter task lighting. All in all it looks fabulous and completely transformed as very evident. Yes, there's a spare room, I've slept in. :-)...See MoreChrisA
