HELP NEEDED with wood species for range hood, mudroom and pantry!
Comments (3)will your kitchen look just like that photo? all white with just a bit of accent wood? If so, I don't think choosing the alder over the oak will make that much difference. However, oak takes staining more evenly than alder. I made a Media console from Alder and stained that and a solid Alder door. The Alder is smoother, without the graining that you see in the oak. So if all these woods will be visible at one spot, I would prob just do the white oak. I actually like the looks of i t better than the Alder. Why don't you have him ceruse the white oak that's going around the vent hood? That would give you a different look. I've done it with oak and it looks really cool. You basically use a liming wax or a white paint rubbed into the grain after you stain it. The white shows up as contrast against the dark stain. this is cerused oak. you can do any color. I've done it in black and one in turquoise. It would be a nice accent around the hood....See MoreFeedback and suggestions on kitchen/Butler Pantry/WIP/Mudroom?
Comments (11)Thanks for the suggestion! You're the 2nd person to suggest flipping the bathroom and pantry. Makes my walk during conference calls a lot longer, but i think it's probably the right thing to do. Though hubby wants it to be a "short" walk from back door to pantry so he's not "carrying groceries halfway across the darn house!". Yes, the upstairs closet is a "laundry" (I forgot to change the label). The master closet is massive bc I work in Fashion and have a lot of clothes ;) It's been my childhood dream to have the kids bedrooms share a jack and jill bath. The hope is that with the tub/toilet having a proper door, privacy of pocket doors isn't a big deal for the sink area....See Moreseeking kitchen/pantry/mudroom layout suggestions
Comments (3)By prep room, you seem to mean 'snack prep', since you are including a beverage fridge and MW. Unless you have daily hired help, or never cook at all, then I think having the prep zone in the small room would be awkward. I like the first plan the best. The closet, pantry, and PR in the second plan aren't realistic--how will you bend to retrieve something from a lower shelf if the aisle is only 2' wide? Where will you stand to open or close the PR from the inside? I don't like the location of the PR in the third option, so I'll concentrate on the original plan: The better placement for the snack prep area would be to the left of the fridge (as you face it), so no one needs to enter too far into the kitchen. You could have a MW in an upper to the left, or use a drawer model between the main fridge and bev fridge. If you keep the snack prep as part of the pantry, I'd suggest keeping frequently used pantry items in a tall cabinet to the right of the fridge, so you don't need to walk to the back pantry just to grab a box of pasta or cornstarch. I also like the 10' island--with DW to the left of the sink, and the meal prep zone to the right. Trash pullout could go on the corner to the right, to be convenient to the fridge. I would store dishes to the right of the range, across from the DW, so that a helper could unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without entering the prep zone....See MoreKitchen with a butlers pantry/ mudroom/ dry bar renovation
Comments (8)If vents and window are staying, you don't have much choice for storage areas--3' on each side of window? Does the 7' measurement include the window trim? The measurements for the 11' wall don't add up, unless you are not including the section with the wall vent.--2'6" plus 4'1" plus 3'2" = 9'9". Here is my original suggestion for pantry and mudroom storage but with a window seat and some extra storage squeezed in. The vent on the hall wall will need to be relocated, but you are considering removing that wall, so I'm assuming you have a plan for the ducting:...See MoreElizabeth
