Should the glass in Butler's Pantry Match Kitchen Glass?
Comments (6)The answer really depends on the orientation. If this is a passage between the rooms, so that the cabinet in there is basically perpendicular to the kitchen, and if there's a closed wall rather than open counter, then there is no reason at all why the cabinets, counter and glass have to have anything to do with each other. They only need to not-clash. That is, no OTK or gloss modern kitchen with rustic distressed Sundance style BP. That would be bad. Really bad. If the BP cabinet faces into the kitchen, you'll want them to have a stronger resemblance, but can still have different elements. I don't think the Antique German glass isn't really that different looking from clear, for this purpose. It's not like you're doing bamboo etching vs. clear, or merry-go-round glass! Long winded way of saying go for it. Warning: BP is good place for marble. If you're pouring wine, however, do it on a tray.... :)...See MoreDoes this butler pantry addition add or detract from my kitchen?
Comments (21)dang, 10 yrs empty! I hope you got a very good deal on it! My place was empty for 4 yrs in the desert and was filthy. Anyway, I do think I was looking at the architect's 'future to be maybe' drawings... ha! Going on your drawing of 'as it is now' - I can see the 'appl wall' now (wondered where an oven would be). If no bp now behind that wall, I'd see what space is usable once you line up the appl wall (if that's what you want to do). That and island placement. Having it as a place to stash extra drinks and pizza boxes (party time) would be a good thing. I did think of the bp for the birds too (cages, dishes etc). Don't think I posted that - I just left it at 'plants'. My oldest son had a bird for a few yrs and I didn't like him using the kitchen sink (we didn't have that much space and only the 1 sink). I thought I might just be weird about that. It would be a handy space to have - and keep that stuff out of your kitchen sinks. If there'd be enough space, you could have a back wall of shallow cabinets. pantries don't need to be that deep. If bigger things they could store under the cabinet run w/the sink in there. I'm posting that 'cause I have no clue how much space would be usable after you line things up (and I know that's important to you). And you need a wide enough walk area behind it from lower outside door up thru to the casual room. I'd probably want the whole one side as just counter and sink (no full height cabs). Space to work in. If you decide against a bp, it looks like you have some usable space in the laundry for a few cabinets for food supplies. And a sink in there for the dishes and cages. but if you have the space (and budget) I'd probably want to keep those things separate. I can fill up a laundry room so fast with other things myself - laundry baskets, sewing machine, ironing board... Also, if you get those things done that you want to do, I agree with maybe just getting the tile and then taking some time off from remodeling / construction to enjoy yourself and new (beautiful) home, gardens and views!! No reason not to even wait to get tile. The stores will still be out there ready to take you money in the future....See MoreNeed recommendations for Butler's Pantry & Layout Review
Comments (33)Look at existing plan and helping make suggestions w/o full on new AutoCAD? A computer program will not provide one with creativity. That will only come from one's head. JK Rowling didn't write what she did because she went out one day and bought a hot shot state of the art word processing program at Office Depot. Her creativity, all of it, came out of her head. Computer programs can allow a greater testing of that creativity of course as JK had it much easier testing and editing of words and phrasing than say Hemingway on his manual typewriter but the one thing they both had in common was ALL of their creativity came out of their brains, not from some motherboard or a Royal manual typewriter. And ironically, most of the creative residential designers come up with the concept, or "big idea" using a freehanded pen on paper. Sure, they may be developed later using Sketchup or some similar program but even then all those ideas are coming from a brain. There's no dialog box that pops up in the middle of the screen saying "The house may be a little dark!" or "Why don't you try the a gabled roof instead of hipped?". I know some registered architects who are very knowledgable in CAD programs that I wouldn't trust to design a house for my dog!...See Morekitchen reno/butlers pantry
Comments (2)mmmmmarianka - are you getting more than one quote on the kitchen? It might behoove you to. $6800 sounds a little expensive to me, but not the worst. Have you considered simpler doors? I wish I had. This is not what you asked but have you posted a layout of the kitchen and pantry area for feedback from this forum, as well as inspiration pictures? You say you're over budget but it will be much more expensive to fix any mistakes. So many Houzz kitchens are gorgeous but missing functionality. I would strongly suggest slowing down the process and soliciting input. I love walk through pantries. Ours is 8.875 feet wide (finished), but we have cabinets on one side and a walk-in pantry on the other with pocket doors. Aisle way, finished, is 36". Are you planning 24" cabinets on just one side? Consider the depth of the beverage fridge if you plan to install one, as this will dictate cabinet depth. (There are some 18" fridges). The main thing I wish I'd done differently in here is to have made the upper cabinets deeper (18" vs. 12") - I would never have noticed the lack of head space, and it would have given so much more interior space for storage. This should be a minor up charge. Have you already purchased your appliances? If not, call your high end dealer (and others) and ask them to keep an eye out for the items on your shopping list - or find a dealer with an outlet, establish a relationship with a sales rep. (There can be great discounts on appliances which are returned to the store post delivery but which are brand new). Here's the left side of ours....See MoreJAN MOYER
