Flooring Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Dark Hardwood to Light Herringbone Vinyl

Hi Friends - working on the master bathroom. I was planning to go with tiles, now considering a vinyl option. Do you think it would look weird to go from dark hardwood (planks in our bedroom) to light herringbone vinyl in the bathroom? I'm trying to find this online, and only see a couple examples. Please convince me one way or another.. I'm torn!! Thank you!

Take a seat! No one here will ever encourage you to put a vinyl wood abutting real wood. A major faux pas!

The above might be tiles. Does it say it is vinyl?

All joking aside, you are talking about your private spaces. Your master bedroom going into your master bath. Honestly, yes you can.

I think most people ask about doing this in common areas.

Most people here On this forum are anti LVP.

Not me, we just did our Florida home in it. But not the bathrooms. But, I have seen it in bathrooms.

IMO why wood look at all do a vinyl tile if you do not want regular tile but no wood look next to real wood IMO master bathrooms should be in the sma ecolor family as the bedroom they are connected and tiled floor in the bathroom is fine but not wood look since you would notusually find wood floors in a bathroom . BTW there is no reason to not use vinyl tile in a bathroom I have laminate in my main bathroom it has been there for 15 yrs with lots of bathroom use by both us and international students for all those years ,IMO a master bath used by adults should be fine to have vinyl tile look flooring.BTW I love 12 x24 porcelain tile on the bathroom floor and shower walls insted of a mixed bag of tile that makes the space feel small. Maybe that would be agood choice in a dark porcealian that is the same color family as the bedroom floor.

Thanks for the tips so far. As for the ceiling, I'm afraid the cold, hard rapping sound my knuckle makes confirms I'm dealing with only 96" from the floor slab to the ceiling. On the oak comment -- I agree it is not the most contemporary look, but I did have concerns about going too light (might show more wear) and/or too modern (which I associate with being somewhat stark & antiseptic. Would maple still be something to consider? Are my worries unfounded? My thoughts on wood vs. an alternative surface were around wanting to have a little warmth (of texture/color) and, quite frankly, resale value. Realizing we will not want to live in a small concrete box in the big city forever, I can't help thinking there is a greater risk with materials like bamboo or cork being perceived as "so 2006" (of course I'm also making an assumption around traditional wood flooring having more timeless appeal). One of my other assumptions that I would welcome folks to challenge (or confirm, if that's the case) is around the decision to stay with a lighter color for the flooring (for the reasons in my first post). The walnut color of the old floor, by itself, is pretty attractive by my eye, but my impression is that it is also making the apartment feel darker than it needs be. Thanks again. Ed

I hope that floor finishong techniques have progressed since the last time those pickled floors were "in"!!! We were home shopping during that time, and the finish on every floor we saw was horrible! I have had theseinexpensive hickory floors for 5 years now, complete with " cabin grade, (no warranty)" finish, and I cannot complain about them at all. Everyone who comes in comments on them, and my realtor cousin's FIRST comment was, "These floors alone would sell this house!"..... So maybe they are trendy....all I know is, I like them!

I would also suggest avoiding vinyl at all costs - especially given the beautiful hardwood in the remainder of the house. Ceramic will always wear better, is better for resale value and a healthier product for your family to come into contact with. A charcoal grout update and charcoal walls or a fun graphic wallcovering would be nice budget friendly updates to this space and still in keeping with the quality of the other finishes of the house. If you can, you can. If you can't you can't. Be OK with EITHER scenario. Give it a go. Take a SAMPLE of the wood you are going to be using and go shopping. Bring HOME a sample of what you think might work. Sit with it in your house (I know it isn't the right house but it isn't in industrial lighting during the day...so it is much better than 'guessing'). Move it into the dark areas and then back into the light. If you have a basement, then take it down there. Leave the REAL WOOD on the stairs (ideally you will run the WOOD on the STAIRS to the basement...and then start the vinyl on the basement slab). Then lay the sample vinyl on the floor below it. Turn the lights on...and off...etc. If you FIND a good match, you will need to know HOW LONG it has been in production. Most man-made products (like vinyl AND engineered hardwoods) have an 18 - 24 MONTH run. After that you will never find it again. So....find out, from the manufacturer, how LONG ago they RELEASED the vinyl colour. That way you can PURCHASE IT IMMEDIATELY or you can WAIT a few months until you need it. Eitherway, always look at 10% extra. That will get you a significant square footage for the time the laundry drain backs up or the hotwater tank 'lets go'. I like to see 100sf of extra (about 5 boxes) for 1000sf of measured floor space. Believe me, over 25 years, you will ABSOLUTELY NEED IT. I can guarantee it.

It's impossible to have a smooth/flat transition as shown in the pic (which looks to be tile to me) because all lvp unless it's a glue down will need an expansion gap in order to float, which would require a transition strip that would be raised. If you like the herringbone look do it in a tile.
