hardwood opinions please -- avoiding the 'dark bowling alley'

Hello all! I've been a long-time reader, only infrequent poster on the ths forums and was hoping to draw on your collective experiences/opinions.

We are about to embark on a fairly extensive remodel of a New York City apartment (read as "small") and have been wondering about the type & layout of hardwood flooring to replace the oh-so-common inexpensive oak scrap parquet.

Our main considerations are:

- the main living space is a long (30+ft) and somewhat narrow (10-12ft) space with a limited amount of light from windows along one of the short walls

- as a product of 1960's design, we have, unfortunately, only 8' ceilings and the space lends itself to design leaning toward the contemporary

- we are putting a high premium on anything that would promote the impression of brightness/lightness and make the ceilings feel as high as possible

Our initial thoughts are to go with Oak with a natural finish thinking we should go lighter in color for this space (the current floors are stained a deep walnut). We're a little concerned about running the flooring along the long axis of the apartment as it might create a "bowling lane" kind of feel to the space -- maybe we should run across the short axis or at a 45 degree angle?

Any advice/opinions the group might have would be greatly apreciated (even questioning some of our original ideas). We're planning on running the same flooring & layout in the rest of the aparement, but as the LR is roughly half the overall space, it is our main concern.

Thanks in advance,

Ed
