quarter sawn white oak vs. maple floors
Comments (1)Ive refinished hardwood floors for over 10 years. And while both maple and white oak have differences its mostly down to color that seperates them. Maple is "harder" based off the Janka rating system used by industry. But dont be fool all wood will dent if something is dropped. But back to color. Yes maple is lighter in natural tone but doesnt accept staining well. It can be done and look good but not as evenly as oak does. Oak is of course darker and also has thicker grains then maple. If you are going natural with the finish i personally like white oak over maple. Maple tends to become too orange as the floor ambers over time....See MoreEngineered vs. solid 5" white oak floors/select vs. character
Comments (10)"What do you recommend for installation?" A true rift and quartered solid 5 1/4" only needs to be nailed (I don't like staples) providing you have the relative humidity in check in all areas of the dwelling. No need for gluing. That reference comes from plain sawn (regular) hardwoods. "Not a professional, but much of the "engineered" hate seems to stem from the past." Thanks sprinkles. There are still a good number of 'old schoolers' out there too that only want the real thing. Take your time and understand the differences. Comments (9)tryingtounderstand, the sales people might actually be saying the truth! I brought a lot of engineered wood samples home, from many different brands, and when you can compare them side by side, in normal lighting, you start to see the difference. Even the ones labeled "matte" had a 10% gloss. Some brands had a "matte" with 20% gloss. So I can see how a sales person might have made that statement when talking about several different lines they carry. I didn't love most of those labeled "matte" because they just seemed like unfinished floors to me. I've grown up with wood floors having some type of shine, so a flat looking floor just seems wrong. The finish I liked the best was one by Mirage Floors, called Cashmere. Not too shiny and not to matte....See MoreCan you mix woods? Maple kitchen with white French oak floors?
