This kind of house is an eighties contemporary- no amount of black, white, and cedar will make it modern farmhouse. What does ‘more current’ mean to you? Any inspiration pictures? I prefer these houses monochromatic (ie all black, all grey) then enlarge the porch/ landing and get great landscaping of different heights and textures.

Yes it’s 80s contemporary. I like the contemporary style. Just feel like the right house of the house could use some being in a roof area. I don’t know

Changes to the roof slope, etc., are much bigger undertakings than just changing out the roof surface -- you need structural changes (and permits) inside, you'd have to replace all the underneath parts... Are you looking for an additional room, or a vaulted ceiling, or maybe a weather vane could scratch the itch?

eta: I don't see anything about the roofline that changes "updated" feeling. The danger is just busy-ing it up with baubles and doodads.

A tall plant - maybe espalier! - against that garage wall would be fabulous! So much more could be done with landscaping. Agree that your roof looks fine.

I would go with the same roof all over.

I think the house is nice and wouldnt change out any rooflines, but, please reconsider having two different roof surfaces. They need to be alike, whether it be metal, or regular roofing. Having two, different ones, will just make it look like you have stuck two different houses together. Roofing shingles is what I would choose for both of them, in a nice dark charcoal color. Your landscaping looks nice. You could have a few more colorful pots on the deck, along with more colorful chair cushions.

Another vote for the same roof type and no need to change the roof line, unless you are also making changes to the inside.

I absolutely love the wider front porch/steps that Celery added. Those go a long way to updating the house.

That wide deck, new door and some killer landscaping like Celery showed will do the trick, but don't mix the roofing materials.

Just curious why is everybody saying not to mix roofs? I see this everywhere in our area. It would be basically same color as shingles ? Not a metal finish that would be completely different. Jus wondering. Like in a picture attached same color different material.

You can get metal roofing that looks like shingles. It's the only type of metal roof my HOA allows. But be sure you love it because it lasts much longer than asphalt shingles.

That house is not contemporary nor is the chang ein roof a garge so IMO no to 2 different roofs . I think to change rooflines for any reason other than you are ripping out the right side and rebuilding would be a mistake not to mentio a lot of $$$$ If I was to do anything I would enlagre the windows make a much nicer entry area and a a walkway from the street to the nice new entry and some really great landscaping all of which would be better than achange of roof.

You asked why folks are saying no to the 2 roof materials. Personally I think it looks cool on some houses, but may not look right on yours. In the inspo pic you posted today, the metal is really just an accent over the porch. That is usually how I see it when roof material is mixed. I’m your original post you said you were thinking of doing it over the garage, which is a huge amount. Literally one half of the house would be metal and the other shingles, it wouldn’t come together and read as one cohesive design but would look like 2 houses pieced together. Really the only place I could see it used as an accent would be over the windows above the garage, but I don’t know how much one would even notice it there.

I really like that celery did. I think you can change a lot with some different steps and landscaping and that will look fantastic. Your house of course. But I would stick with 1 type of roof not 2, more streamlined to my eye.
