Any ideas as to how update this piece?

i would like to lighten and brighten this piece. Something white-ish and neutral. in the images you’ll see I have one beside the other, but they are meant to stack, with the glass unit on top. I think I’d also like to replace the glass doors (one of the glass pieces is broken) and use something opaque instead. Anything to hide the junk inside! There’s also some lovely detailed lines in the solid doors and drawer, how could I showcase that?

👍 to the paint idea, but be sure to do a lot of prep.. going from dark to light will take lots of sanding. Is the brown paint or Stain? Oil based? Check with a painting professional as to the right way to do it. Some updated hardware (possibly using the same holes) would help too. I agree with emmarene9 to take the rest of the room into consideration when choosing a color or finish.

It really depends on your decor but I will share one technique I've used. I strip the frame of all it's finish and then paint successive coasts of different color paints. After all coats have dried and cured I use fine grade sandpaper to remove some of the paint to varying degrees. This will leave you with a multicolor finish that will often pick up any grain in the wood. Depending on the colors you use the resulting finish can either be subtle or more pronounced.

The cabinets look like birch, not oak. Do you have any photos of one whole door to show the grain? Are you planning to change anything else, such as flooring or lighting? If so, make all color decisions after changing the lighting. You can buy new LED "tubes" that are inserted directly in where the old fluorescent tubes are. It's cheaper than redoing the light fixtures if budget is limited.

Looking for ideas on how to update this small shed style 70s home, siding is new hardie plank with aluminum shutters , definitely needs a new roof and any other ideas are welcome. I'm stuck and can't think of anything. Considering a matte standing seam roof but also thought about should a porch be added over the front door. Thinking of removing louver shutter spacers perhaps or black windows. Different paint color maybe. I'm stuck for how to improve the exterior. Considering painting the fence black as well or a metal frame fence with wood slats. Thanks for any opinions.

Unclear what you want to change & what look you are going after. First impression is that the carpet needs to go bye-bye. Or is that just carpet pad? Second thought. The bed & wardrobe pieces are lovely. (The bed needs a thicker mattress, IMO.) Worth keeping or passing on to some one who will appreciate them if you have fallen out of love with them. Neither of the keeper furniture pieces are to my particular preferred taste but I do like them and would hang onto them in a secondary/ guest bedroom. And I could well end up loving them after all of the new decorating elements fall into place. One thing: I would never even think about painting them. I would toss the remaining three pieces. So that covers the big basic things without knowing your taste and goals.

The top photo shows it in the space right now. If I were to stack one on top of the other I would have to move it to the left wall (where i have the wood cabinet and plants)

Yes to the obscure glass or even heavily patterned glass like rain glass. Would you consider painting it red? Not a bright red but a subdued darker color red. That might coordinate with the other chest in the photo above. I do like that it is a stackable piece. Would be great for a home office. Not sure what to do with the accompanying box though. That could be decoratively painted and used elsewhere. Good luck!

It’s stained and not painted. My mother-in-law had it professionally done many years back, before she passed it on to us. I would guess oil based.

It needs to be stacked to look right. The top would have a base if it were free standing. You don't need to go to the trouble of changing out the glass: sort through your books and arrange them. They will look just fine!
