Any ideas for a living room update?
Comments (24)The color is lighter but it's still too big and puffy. My 2 cents, and story from childhood: Both my grandmas lived within 3 miles of us and regularly hosted large family gatherings (30-50 of us). Neither had giant sectionals where all could have a puffy seat, just a regular sofa and a couple of upholstered chairs. We sat where we could, used lots of folding chairs and tables for meals and to play cards. Kids were in and out of the house playing. Looking back, the lack of seating was never a problem because being together was key. I will add, I've been married almost 50 years, have raised two sons, decorated always around their needs and likes. Now, my home is filled with my style and lots of memories. My hubby, bless him, has learned that as long as it is comfy and fits him, the decor is all my choice! Good luck with your decor reform!...See MoreAny ideas on how to update old picture frames?
Comments (5)It really depends on your decor but I will share one technique I've used. I strip the frame of all it's finish and then paint successive coasts of different color paints. After all coats have dried and cured I use fine grade sandpaper to remove some of the paint to varying degrees. This will leave you with a multicolor finish that will often pick up any grain in the wood. Depending on the colors you use the resulting finish can either be subtle or more pronounced....See Moreany ideas on how to update the style of the roof.
Comments (23)Hi E Ktz. You asked why folks are saying no to the 2 roof materials. Personally I think it looks cool on some houses, but may not look right on yours. In the inspo pic you posted today, the metal is really just an accent over the porch. That is usually how I see it when roof material is mixed. I’m your original post you said you were thinking of doing it over the garage, which is a huge amount. Literally one half of the house would be metal and the other shingles, it wouldn’t come together and read as one cohesive design but would look like 2 houses pieced together. Really the only place I could see it used as an accent would be over the windows above the garage, but I don’t know how much one would even notice it there....See MoreAny ideas on how to update rooms without structural change?
Comments (19)You have a lovely home! I agree with most here. These are my suggestions: 1) Number One: Definitely remove the popcorn ceilings everywhere. You will be surprised as to what a big difference it makes. Benjamin Moore Decorator White paint on ceilings no matter what the wall color might be. It's a bight clean white. 2) Dining room to stay as is. Wonderful ceiling. Change the dark drapes to something classic, stripes or light print, with trims and borders. 3) Please don't open to the kitchen. But I agree to carry the wood floors into the kitchen. and family room, unless there is an issue with your pup. If so, change the tile floor to a classic tile. The existing tile is more southwestern or Tuscany and not Classic Traditional. 4) Close up the large niche in the living room. 5) Straighten the arches of the doorways to match the heights of existing doorways. 6) Remove the existing wall unit in the family room and consider updating with a new unit (without the arches). 7) Remove the cabinetry on either side of the fireplace. Replace with matching cabinets, art, lamps. All the built ins date your space. 8) Again, change the curtains to compliment the dining room. I'm not a big fan of "puddled" curtains. They should be 1/2" off the floor to stay neat and operate properly. Bring the curtain rods in the living room to the ceiling. The advice here is to streamline all the architectural features with little corrections. 9) If you want to some improvement in the kitchen, consider removing the recessed "buffet" and making that a pantry wall with the refrigerator and wall oven. Remove some overhead cabinets at the sink wall around the window and enlarge the window. You can have a full height pantry 18" wide and the same depth as the counter on either end (where the fridge and the wall oven are now located. Not too wide, just well fitted. Filling in the countertop can be butcher block, instead of trying to match the marble....See Moredecoenthusiaste
