OT....too often used expressions
Comments (82)Lemon, If you had asked me, I would have visualised a water fountain as one of those stone garden ornaments, perhaps those people you spoke to thought that was what you meant! I have fallen foul many times in the past of putting the wrong mental image into someone's head, e.g. trying to describe something over the phone is a mine field. So much easier now with cameras on phones as long as both parties have them! I wonder if they can be used in a country where one does not speak the language? Just flash up a pix of what is required? Beats a dictionary or pointing, my usual methods of communication :-)...See MoreQuaint Expressions
Comments (150)Don't hear 'dot and carry' used much over here these days possibly because it is not considered politically correct or in good taste to draw attention to the misfortunes of others, although this doesn't seem to apply to parts of Continental Europe. OT, but a TV travel show once did an item on the difficulty of using public transport when incapacitated by a broken leg. A reporter was fitted up with a plaster cast and sent to France and Spain to see how he did. In both countries he was the source of endless mirth as he hobbled along, with many members of the public being too doubled up with laughter at his plight to offer help. In case this gives the impression that we in the UK are paragons of virtue and kindliness, the same TV show arranged for a wheel-chair-bound woman to test out accessibility of hotels. Several were so impossible to get into she had to return with a 'helper' the following day. Once they finally reached the reception desk the manager welcomed them with "We saw you trying to get in here yesterday" .. :-( I thought a roadster was the old name for an open car?...See MoreHas anyone used CTI Expressions subway tile?
Comments (1)Daltile specifically makes a white that matches Kohler. It is the K 101 White color. You cannot get more matching than that. It is the same price group 2 that all of the whites are, unless you want matte instead of gloss. Which I would never do in a bath. Dirt cheap, and the perfect color....See MoreRussian express--my POTS!
Comments (19)Like Bart says, the weather sites exaggerate a bit. It's been cold here, but not that cold. Yesterday I got out in the garden and there were (gasp) patches of bare ground. Today is the last day of clear weather and severe cold; now comes the snow, followed by rain. At the moment the forecast is no longer talking about icy rain, and I hope DD won't have to deal with it in commuting to school. All this precipitation is a good thing, anyway, for Ingrid--hurray, Ingrid! you got rain!--and for all of us who are suffering from drought. I'm hopeful that the weather of the last week and that to come will go a good way toward replenishing our aquifers and reservoirs. Low twenties is cold, but cold can be beautiful. I remember the frosty mornings of my Florida childhood with great affection. Of course we didn't have tropical or sub-tropical plants to worry about....See More- 3 years ago
