Great info. I think Americans often respond viscerally to these types of houses. I know I do and therefore, my husband and I want one for our retirement. I'd take most of those lovely homes in a heartbeat!

I'm with amsamsams about the function and evolution of the real farm house. I grew up in NoVa in a late 60s 'farmhouse' style home that while modern and convenient is rather cookie-cutter and has none of the grace, style, warmth, functionality and energy efficiency of our ever-evolving 1948 real farm home. Our home was originally three rooms + a bathroom downstairs and 2 rooms upstairs, then someone added on two more rooms downstairs which included one step to climb to get to the new rooms. Twenty-five years ago another family added an upstairs bedroom above the previous addition and turned one upstairs room into a bathroom. We have discovered that the quality of the building was much better then than what is built today, in our experience. When we renovated the downstairs bathroom 11 years ago, down to the studs, we were shocked at the enormous amount of wood in the walls compared to more modern built homes we had owned. We renovated the upstairs bathroom a year ago and found the same thing up there, lots of solid wood in a sturdily built home. Our old farm home has 7.5 foot ceilings downstairs and 6 foot 2 inch ceilings upstairs, which helps keep our heating bills low in the wintertime. It's simply part of the quirky charm of a real old farmhouse that continues to evolve as our needs change and as long as our time, money, and DIY stamina allows. It's been a great blessing to not have the money to start comprehensive renovations but to do them piecemeal as we can. Time to reflect on and to evaluate the improvement initiatives of others often provides feedback that re-shapes our decision making process and results in better functionality of final renovations that are visually pleasing and more purposeful than the original concept that had caught our attention in the first place. In the end, every change we make has to pass the "does this work in real life on our budget" test and the "will it work with real farm dirt and wear" test. Ironically, last week I had the chance to tour Rocky Ridge, the early 1900s farm home of Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder, that they built one room at a time over 17 years. It had good flow and a very strong craftsman influence inside but is very simple on the outside and
probably would not be on your list of lovely farm houses, but it met and
exceeded not just their needs but their ideal of the perfect home. What matters most is not the public perception of any family's home, but the perception of the family that resides within it's hopefully happy walls.
