Update on my broken leg

Well I saw the ortho surgeon today and it was not what I wanted to hear. I will be having surgery next Wednesday. He will put in a metal plate and screws along with something he called a cross over which will help make my ankle much more stable. I have extremely flat feet and my feet turn inward at the arch which weakens the ankle. Apparently this will provide me a better stance and support. He thinks it will be a 1 to 2 hr surgery. I am concerned because I have so many health issues. Including a heart problem which is related to my high blood pressure. I also have diabetes and a few auto immune disorders.

So that's what I know today. He took off the cast urgent care had put on and I am currently in a giant heavy boot. Sleeping in it will be tricky! When the cast came off my foot was very bruised. When it was put on I didn't have any bruises at all so I was a little surprised to see that.

This is all new to me since the only thing I broke was my wrist back in high school or middle school. I like the support and feel of the big boot. Wish it wasn't so heavy.

Not really what I wanted to hear but I know it's the better option.

So I am hoping and praying everything goes exceptionally well and I have quick healing bones!

My duck was attacked by a bobcat and it took a chunk out of her butt but thankfully she is still alive thanks to our great yellow lab that chased off the bobcat... she is healing and continues to get better everyday I seem to think she has a broken leg bc she will not step on it and she drags it but she can move it so I know she can not be paralyed on that side... I was wondering if should just leave it be or is there anything I can really do about it?

    Dog With Broken Leg?

    Q

    Comments (10)
What a sad state of affairs. Realistically, there are 3 choices. 1) Get the leg completely fixed 2) If getting the leg completely fixed is truly not affordable, and the dog actually has a loving home, get the leg amputated. The dog will adapt to being on 3 legs as soon as he wakes from surgery, and will have no mobility problems. 3) If there are NO funds to pay for the dog's care - put it down and DO NOT get another dog that cannot be cared for. It's not fair to the animal. I can't see allowing the animal to "mend on its own", given how the leg was described, as being an option. If they don't intend to do anything for the dog, I hope SOMEONE has the fortitude to report it to the proper authority. Al

I’m so sorry you’ll have to go thru surgery, Raven, but it sounds like the best course of action for you. As long as your surgeon is aware of your other health issues, I believe you’ll be 100% fine. Make sure they also understand that from a medication standpoint too for any interactions. Wishing you the best!

As for the bruising, not to worry. I had a mild ankle sprain once and was shocked when a big bruise showed up days later up the back of my calf.

Wishing you a full and pain free recovery. I broke my hip/thigh in 2009 in 3 places. They put in a metal rod from my knee to my hip with lots of screws. Once I healed I was back to doing everything I did before. It took months, but you can't speed up healing. Take it easy with your feet up and watch a lot of movies or read lots of books.

Oh my! ! !! That sounds like quite an ordeal, but it's good it is going to be fixed properly. I'll be keeping you in my prayers for a very successful surgery and a full and pain free recovery.

I also have sort of flat feet that turn inward, one more than the other. A number of years ago an orthopedic doctor told me I should wear athletic shoes, and to look for some that are made for pronated feet. He suggested a couple of brands, and I went shopping and bought a pair. I was amazed at the difference it made, both in how I walked and in how my back felt. You probably already know about wearing shoes with proper support, but thought I'd mention it anyhow.

The doctors may well watch you better and you get better treatment because you have other health issues. And you know they would not suggest this type of treatment if they thought you were a big risk. you wont just be another common ho hum patient for them. I will keep you in my prayers for a good outcome, and patience for you!

Xray techs aren't trained to read images. Stick with what an orthopedist or radiologist says. Good luck

Well crumbs. I kind of expected this because of the sort of break. Not weight bearing but the malleolus is there for major ligament and tendon attachments. The bruising is from bleeding. bones bleed and the blood moves through the tissues. Oddly enough the big damage and healing process is due to the damage done to those attachments as opposed to screwing things into your bones during surgery. Its why a good surgeon will forgo surgery if possible. At least you come out of it with a much stronger ankle. I will certainly be thinking good thoughts for you.

It does sound like if you can tolerate everything, you will be in better shape than before. I second what Rusty said about shoes. I buy mine from an athletic shoe store that has me take off my shoes and walk for them to see if I pronate one way or the other. Fortunately right now I don't. I had plantar faciatis years ago and the shoes I bought made such a huge difference. They can be more expensive but well worth it. Prayers and healing thoughts for your upcoming surgery.

Raven, if you are concerned about a 1-2 hours surgery with some other issues, be sure to tell your anesthesiologist when you meet him/her. It can be very reassuring - they are such an important part of surgery.

Raven — late getting back to you. So sorry about your fractured ankle and the need for surgery. Did you get a 2nd opinion? IIRC, your xray showd a fracture of the fibula (thinner bone) that appeared to not involve the ankle join (good). I’ll try to find and re-read with orthopod thought you needed a plate aand hardware installed. Maybe you are older (than ?40, ha ha) or your bones are thin or there are other considerations.

I wish you a speedy, complete and satisfactory surgery and recovery.

Bored_housewife. I am not a doctor or know it all. Your fracture at the distal fibula seems not too bad. You can have swelling even wo a fx. It likely hurt like the dickens, but does not (from what I can see) involve the ankle joint. It seems as though it is a minimal fracture.

Not, I would think, a bad fracture to sustain.

True, X-Ray techs are not trained to read x-rays, nor in a position to give any interpretations. However, as many para-professionals with experience, they can and do pick up a lot of information. It is not acceptable for them to offer their conjectures. And just try to get a tech or sonographer or EKG tech to tell you what they see — unlikely to ever happen.

    Dear bored_housewife,

I do not read every post on KT (does anyone? you?). My response to this thread was to express concern, affection and good wishes to Raven and to make a few comments on other contributions.

I posted a comment on your fractured ankle to offer support.

Ouch! You seem unecessarily loaded for bear.

[with my ipad, it is very difficult to EDIT or copypasta — Houzz begins wildly flipping my reverse video selected text before I can highlight but a word — I’m mentioning this for the pedants here who seem unaware.]

    You wrote:

“petalique I actually already knew that my very healed fracture from last August wasn't too bad, but thank you for telling me what I already knew.

Defensive sounding. I am not a mind reader nor do I read all your posts from elsewhere.

I've already said here (in another post) had I not gone to get it xrayed, I would've thought it was just a sprain but because I did get it xrayed I had to wear the air cast or my boss wouldn't have let me work.

    Okay…

“And because you are not a doctor, I would never take actual advice from you anyway. ;) “

Dearest bored hw, I was not offering you ”advice” but support. (Reading comprehension fail. Try giving people the benefit of the doubt. No one here is giving you advice, and should you ever ask for advice, I urge others to move on. Prickly.

“And as I said in my last post, which is just above yours, I USED THE WRONG TERM. BIG HARRY DEAL.

Yes, I saw that and couldnt grasp what you meant. ”the wrong term” was what exactly? Never mind. Maybe you dont know.

…”this is why I usually avoid commenting here as much as I once did. Everyone is a know-it-all and feels the need to feel superior to others by giving their opinions when none was asked for.

Are you SERIOUS? Don’t comment then. Save your ink. YOU commented on a public forum where people exchange ideas. Don't want support? Youre free to write in a private diary.

”Everyone is a know-it-all” ? Oh, you mean like someone presuming, in a defensive hair-trigger way, to understand the intent behind someone’s motives when they take the time to respond to your interjection in an original poster’s thread? ASSUME that’others are trying to ”feel superior” to you? (Do you frequently find yourself making these sorts of misaligned defensive attributions to well-meaning others?)

No opinion asked for? So why pop into someone else OP and make your comments about you, essentially giving your two cents?

“But thank you for trying to make me feel like an uneducated idiot. You have the you deserve.”

Way off base., bored_housewife. It looks like you perceive a lot of others have (intentionally or not) made you feel ”like an uneducated idiot.” Try to avoid convincing them.

“You have the you desreve.” <—— I have no idea what this means. Perhaps you were getting ready for a nap?

Unless you demonstrate that you are aware and remorseful at flying off the tippy handle, or show some rational mood shift, I do not want to engage you again. No need to respond, I’ve plopped you into a file folder.

The surgery went well! I am home in recovery mode. I have a nerve block pump keeping my leg totally numb and unusable. Plus drugs. I can't put weight on it at all which makes a few things difficult! He had to use a bit more hardware than originally anticipated. I have extremely flat feet and abnormal structure which is part of the reason for the surgery. I also have a degenerative disease that is not curable and contributes to my leg and feet weakness. This is giving me a much more stable and strong ankle.

Thanks everyone! My new hardware, expensive jewelry!

Godforbid this is Mia!!!, but we both lost our older pets, and both of us had new younger pets... Their pet destroyed the entire steel kennel they lived in, and my pet had torn down the curtains...
