My duck has a broken Leg

I was going to check on my ducks, and when I got out to my barn I relized one of them wasnt feeding and drinking like the others so I put my hand in their cage and my duck started hopping away on one foot, seems his other leg is completely lifeless, and it doesnt seem to hurt her when I sqeeze and move the leg around, i think the is broken at the top joint, like its thigh, she is eating and drinking still but its very difficult for her to get around, is there anything I can do? she is just a duckling about 3 weeks old, I put her back in with the other ducks her size. well let me know please, oh and by the way this happenend about 13 hours ago

If you can set and splint it with a couple of popsicle sticks, then wrap in gauze before putting the tape on (so it doesn't stick to the fuzz too much) it likely has a pretty good chance of healing. I'd do a Google search to find out more... something like "waterfowl treating broken leg".

Did your duck heal? If so, what position did you splint the leg in (straight out or in a sitting position)? I believe my duck has a broken leg. It just hangs there. He is young (7-8 weeks old). I just got him. I feel terrible for him and don't want to put him down, but I don't want him to suffer either. I'd take him to a vet but money is really tight. I need help. I feel terrible. Any suggestions?

I'm just very certain it is not the food. My grandmother raised several ducks when she was young and my mom raised several when she was a kid and now we have some and we feed them the same thing my mother and grandmother fed theirs. They are almost 2 years old and I think that if it were the food this would have happened way before now. But, I will go ahead and let you know what we are feeding them anyways. When they were little we let them peck outside and fed them worms and bugs and baby chicken cracked grain. NOW, we feed them bread, grain, fish, crackers, cereal and they eat bugs all day outside. One of the ducks (the one that is walking still) is looking better today. (But the other one that couldn't walk still cannot walk) We felt around for broken bones. I didn't feel any and both of the legs looked the same.... On one of the ducks it is her right and on the other duck it is her left. I am hoping they will get better day by day. I don't know of any web sites to go to and get any info. from avian vets. Does anyone know of any...Again any advice or info. is appreciated....Genny

Hi Elaine! I dropped a large landscape timber on it 2 Christmas' ago. I broke 4 toes, tore the achilles tendon, and the tendon that runs down the outside of the right ankle. The tendon pulled the bone away from itself. They treated me for 2 months, and released me. About every 3 - 4 months since the original injury, I would step down and feel "bone-on-bone". Then, this past spring, I felt the leg go again. I was put into a boot cast and sent on my way. I worked outside in the yard a little in the Spring, but I just couldn't get comfortable. Finally - I simply started staying inside and not walking on it. Then - in July, I was walking to my car and the leg gave out. Back into the boot cast. It didn't get better. Finally my doctor sends me to a surgeon to have my "tendon re-attached". The surgeon looks at my films and says, "You've got a broken leg!" Sure enough - clearly on the films 2 years ago and on the new films - there's my broken tibia, clear as can be! I had to go through tests for bone cancer and MRI's to try to find out "why" it didn't heal. The answer: Because they didn't immobilize it! Anyway - After 10 weeks in a pretty fiberglass cast - the cast came off today, and I'm back in the boot cast until 12/22. Then they will allow me to walk without any support. If the tibia breaks again - I will need surgery to put plates in me leg. What pains me the most about the whole situation? My gardens look AWFUL! LOL...

I would use a good carpenter or wood glue. You don't want to use anything that cannot be undone in the future, particularly if you don't like the way the joining looks after you're done. I would do a quick web search for furniture restoration techniques before you start out to see the best way to clamp the leg while the glue is curing. Also, any filling that needs to be done should be done after the gluing process with a proper wood filler, not with an epoxy. Anyway, that my 2 cents for what it's worth, and that's about 2 cents.

well I did notice last night when I went to check on my duck that it seems like she can move it now, she is actually able to pull her upper leg up and is able to move her foot, well not a whole lot but the day it happenend when shed move her leg would turn every way. but I was at atwoods and the I was reading a book, it said that bird heal amazingly fast I guess thats true

I believe my duckling has a broken leg. It just hangs there. I've heard of splinting it. What position do I splint it in? Hanging like it is or in a bent (his sitting position)position? Need help. I feel horrible and don't want him to suffer, and I certainly don't want to put him to sleep. Need help badly! Respond to tiffntat@yahoo.com. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

If you live in houston texas, just take it to bear creek park in the duck santuary. there are these people there who take care of ducks and if they see one hurt, they will fix it. My duck has 2 broken legs and we are hoping it lives. Wish me good luck!
P.S. (im only 9 but im a expert on animals but i get depressed when things are hurt or dying.:-0)

My duck was attacked by a bobcat and it took a chunk out of her butt but thankfully she is still alive thanks to our great yellow lab that chased off the bobcat... she is healing and continues to get better everyday I seem to think she has a broken leg bc she will not step on it and she drags it but she can move it so I know she can not be paralyed on that side... I was wondering if should just leave it be or is there anything I can really do about it?
