a update on my broken wrist

I was asked awhile back to keep every one updated on my progress with the Broken wrist.Went back to the Bone specialist this morning,and more Xrays was taken.I had a good report on it. Dr said its healing very good,and I do not need any therapy on it,that I shocked him by being 2

months ahead of schedule with my ability to move it and gaining strength in my hand.He told me to use it,but to be very careful ,so as not to break it again.DON'T HAVE TO GO BACK TO HIM AGAIN. So that was good news today.I told him its still hurting, but nothing like it was.He says it will hurt for probably several months yet, just not bad.

That is wonderful news Jean. You will continue to improve, and you may have some bad days, but don't let it get you down, because it will improve for several more months.

Bones hurt! They really do, and you can't appreciate how much until you've been there. You have really done great! Good going!

Fantastic !! See, all that picture taking, downloading photos and typing on the forum turned out to be great exercise and you didn't even know it.

Sounds like a spasm of some sort. I have fibromyalgia and have various things like that happen. But your's sounds like it might have been a spasm. Next time try some heat on it. If you're around perimenopause/menopause age, you might try taking calcium/magnesium. That helps with spasms.

That is great! When I was 16 I had a double fractured femur (among other injuries). I asked my "very funny" Doctor if I'd be able to Surf again. He said "Oh heck yeh, you'll bend that leg before you break it again." Gayle

Hi Becky - I had a distal radius fracture of the left (non-dominant) wrist in June 2007. I didn't trip or fall down a mountain, but took a fall from height (had a good concussion as well - but it could have been worse). Fortunately peak gardening season was over, but the gardens and lawn were kinda messy that summer. Had surgery, 3 weeks in cast, and then occupational therapy for about 3 months. That's the hard part! Your wrist will be frozen after the cast comes off, as well there will be tissue atrophy. My therapist (whose name was Becky too - she was great!) was honest about the fact that it is painful to rehabilitate a frozen joint which I appreciated. My advice - do the exercises diligently (but don't overdo). They are critical to restoring strength and range of motion. Do a little scar massage daily to keep the tissue pliable. Make sure you're not flexing the wrist when you sleep (my OT made a splint for that). Gradually increase activity with the broken hand. Don't overwork your good arm!

It is a mechanical timer ... push in and turn to set the timer, then pull out to start the cycle. Everything worked fine on the first load, then it just spun freely when I pushed it in and tried to turn it to start the second load. The knob does not simply pull off, screw off, or have a pin underneath it holding it on. Removing it probably involves removing the electrical console, as dadoes suggested. Replacing the timer looks like an easy fix according to youtube, but how to get the knob off is a mystery. I've probably seen a dozen different methods on youtube, some of them likely beyond my DIY capabilities. I went ahead and scheduled a repair appointment for next week. I'm afraid I might end up doing more harm if I attempt a DIY removal of the knob. And I'm kind of reluctant to order a $275 part (the timer) if there's a chance I don't need it (though I probably do!). I used to have a lot of faith in my DIY abilities but I'm going through a no-confidence phase. Thank you all.

Kay;Thank you for that bit of encouragement..This evening HAS been worse w ith the pain in it, but not as bad at the minute.Its eased off a lot now.
Rita; The first therapy session back in april,I was told to do some exercises they showed me how to do,and told me I need to do it every day,and I continued to do it,even after They said no more therapy until the pins and rod comes out, then I was suppose to have extensive therapy for several months.I guess my continued doing it anyway,done a lot for me.I even done it when it hurt so bad I couldn't hardly stand it.I am glad I did, now.

Michelle:Thank you,that was so sweet of you to say.I certainly hope I don't over do it and make it worse.Dr told me NO DIGGING IN THE GARDENS. AT LEAST NOT FOR SOME TIME, YET. I got weeds every where out there, but its really too hot for me,to start pulling weeds out,unless I get a few cooler days.I can't handle these upper 90's that feels like 103,like today.

DEBRA;I hope the pain gos away sooner, too.Its been a non stop thing since April 7th.

Jean, glad to hear your wrist is improving and that you surprised that doctor. Wish there was something to suggest for the pain. These things do take a long time unfortunately.

Great that you got a good doctors report. Physical therapy can be more painful than the actual injury. I'm glad you are doing better and got a good report. The weeds will wait for you, I have them all over my iris gardens. When you get older, you have to pace yourself and just do what you can.

Renee: Guess thats one way to look at it.The weather is co operating to keep me indoors so I can't work on the weeds,pulling them out.Course,I would be using my good hand to do it.

VICKIE; Thank you,there will be weeds,if I keep postiing.I have never seen so many weeds and grass in my garden before.But,Its really too hot for me out there,anyway,except real late in the evening when its shady there.
DOT;The therapist had told me we would really get down to therapy after the pins and rod comes out,and its going to be very painful.I almost went by his office just to tell himI DON'T HAVE TO HAVE MORE THERAPY,but, I just wanted to get home.Yes,I have found out,I can't do as much as I use to be able to do.The age,and bad back problems slows you down alot (77) now.My daughter has been taking me to the Dr and Therapy,and when she brought me home yesterday,she says now MOTHER,YOU HAVE A EXCELLANT REPORT,BUT DON'T YOU DARE GO OUT AND START WORKING IN THEM FLOWERS, THEY WILL WAIT SOME MORE,"DO YOU HEAR ME?" I told her yes,I do hear you,and will not do some thing to break it again.She says she thinks I can go back to driving again,will be ok.Hehehe,I been driving if I need to go after some thing,she just didn't know it.Power stearing makes it very easy.
